Lauren Graham might have just signed up to star in a reboot of The Mighty Ducks, but that hasn’t stopped fans from trying to will a second Gilmore Girls reunion into existence. While no official word has been given about whether another reunion season will happen, Graham and her ever-spunky sidekick, Melissa McCarthy, just took a photo in front of a green screen that has given some fans hope. So, is the picture a hint at an upcoming GG project, or did the actresses who played Sookie St. James and Lorelai Gilmore just meet up for some girl time?

Melissa McCarthy and Lauren Graham show up in a photo together

Who doesn’t love to see two of their favorite television characters back in a room together, years after a series ended? McCarthy made that dream a reality for Gilmore Girls fans when she posted a photo of herself with Graham. The pair, standing in front of a green screen, smile widely at the camera. McCarthy didn’t mention what the get-together was all about, but a few superfans have spotted a couple of clues that pinpoint when the photo was taken.

Bustle notes that Graham appears to be wearing the same clothing she was wearing when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. During her appearance on the show, Graham introduced the world to her new rescue puppy. She then discussed her neighbors, Dax Shepard and Kristin Bell, before digging into her upcoming television projects. She also took part in a game of “Burning Questions.” Sadly, Ellen DeGeneres didn’t ask a single question about Gilmore Girls.

Does the picture indicate an upcoming Gilmore Girls reunion?

McCarthy didn’t breathe a word about Gilmore Girls in her Instagram caption, but fans are certainly taking it to mean the duo is filming an upcoming season of the series. McCarthy’s Instagram comments were flooded with Stars Hollow fans looking for confirmation of a second season of A Year In the Life. McCarthy is staying mum, but there is plenty of reason to believe the pair could be teaming up to reprise their roles sooner rather than later.

The showrunners are into the idea, several of the key actors are on board, and Netflix seems to be open to entertaining the concept. Amy Sherman-Palladino even has a “Gilmore Clause” written into her contract with Amazon, leaving the door open for more content. When it will take shape is anyone’s guess, but Sherman-Palladino insists the format will be different than Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

Would Sookie St. James have a more prominent role in a second reunion?

McCarthy’s character, Sookie, was such an essential part of the success of Gilmore Girls during its original run, that fans just assumed she’d play a massive role in the reunion special that aired on Netflix back in 2016. That wasn’t to be, though. McCarthy’s character only showed up in a single scene during the 4-part special.

The reason for McCarthy’s limited involvement is a bit confusing. According to Vanity Fair, McCarthy claims that she wasn’t invited to take part in the reunion. Sherman-Palladino, the famed creator of the series, insisted that she’d happily fit McCarthy in where she could. What apparently really happened was pretty complicated. McCarthy was initially approached about being a part of the reunion and was all for it, but eventually, her schedule filled up. When the production was ready to get off the ground, McCarthy no longer had the time to get involved.

The single scene that included McCarthy was fit into the very end of the filming schedule, but it was far from enough for fans. McCarthy has never said if she’d like to be involved in a second reunion, but fans do hope she’d be more deeply embedded in a second reunion if it does happen. Right now, McCarthy’s schedule is pretty packed. She is serving as an executive producer on Little Big Shots and is rumored to be involved in the upcoming The Little Mermaid remake. She also has two forthcoming flicks that are currently in post-production.
