Gilmore Girls fans don’t always agree, but it is almost unanimous that Luke Danes and Lorelai Gilmore were the perfect couple. It makes sense that fans hated Lorelai’s season 7 storyline, then. In season 7, Lorelai married Rory Gilmore’s father, Christopher Hayden. The marriage was ill-hated, and fans mostly despised their marriage, but it had to happen if you think about it.

‘Gilmore Girls’ fans hated that Lorelai Gilmore married Christopher Hayden in season 7

Lorelai and Christopher’s marriage storyline in season 7 is among the most hated of the series. Gilmore Girls fans never liked the pair together, and they especially hated the fact that, in a way, Christopher came between Lorelai and Luke Danes.

Fans of the series also argue that the decision to seriously pair the couple up deviated from Amy Sherman-Palladino’s original vision. Sherman-Palladino walked away from the series after season 6 of Gilmore Girls due to a contract dispute. Another writer picked up the reins and made some choices that certainly didn’t seem in line with what Sherman-Palladino would have done. Still, you could argue that Sherman-Palladino almost foreshadowed the marriage.

Sherman-Palladino might not have penned season 7 of Gilmore Girls, but she was responsible for the chemistry between Lorelai and Christopher. Sherman-Palladino spent several seasons building up the notion that Christopher and Lorelai could end up in a relationship at some point. Their will-they-won’t-they storyline began in season one and carried through the entirety of the series.

Sherman-Palladino is also responsible for pushing the couple together at the end of season 6. The famed showrunner did write the episode that put Lorelai in Christopher’s apartment after she issued an ultimatum to Luke. While Sherman-Palladino might not have made them husband and wife, you could say the idea was there, and it was a good way to get Lorelai to where she needed to be.

Lorelai needed to marry Christopher to realize Luke Danes was the right man for her

Lorelai and Christopher’s marriage might not have been a fan favorite, but you could argue that it needed to happen. The marriage seemed to push Lorelai and Luke back together, eventually. That’s certainly a good thing.

Following the ultimatum, Lorelai was sure that she was done. She was in a lot of emotional pain over it, but clearly, she had closed the door on Luke. Her ill-fated marriage to Christopher was helpful. The union showed Lorelai that while Chris was a convenient option, he wasn’t the right choice. Their divorce helped prove that she wanted and needed to be with Luke. If you look at it that way, technically, the marriage was a good thing.
