The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the most successful movie franchise of all time, and because of this they have actors lining up to appear in their films. With such a deep pool of characters to pull from, the MCU has no shortage of roles.

With plenty of movies and series in the pipeline, they’re looking to fill a lot of spots. One of these parts they were looking to fill was She-Hulk.

One potential casting choice some fans speculated on was Gina Carano. Carano didn’t get the part, and for some fans, that was a good thing. Here’s why they thought that.

Who is Gina Carano?

Carano is a former MMA fighter turned actor. After a very successful career in MMA, she began working in films and TV shows. Her most notable roles to date include several roles in Steven Soderbergh films, a part in a Fast and the Furious movie, and a role in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian as a former Rebel shocktrooper named Cara Dune.

She’s also started her fair share of controversy. According to Insider, Carano made light of users who include their personal pronouns in their Twitter profile and was roasted by some Twitter users, calling her transphobic. She also made somewhat controversial comments about COVID-19.

The comments caused some fans to campaign Disney to fire her from The Mandalorian, though it appears as though it will have no effect on her appearance in season 2 of the show.

Carano already appears on one Disney+ show and there was another one some fans thought she may appear on.

Marvel casting She-Hulk

Carano might seem like a good fit for the character of She-Hulk. After all, she’s got an athletic build from her years training as a fighter. She didn’t get the role on the planned Disney+ series, however.

According to Deadline, it went to Tatiana Maslany. Maslany is best known for her role in the show Orphan Black. She’s also more recently starred in HBO’s new adaptation of Perry Mason

In the show she’ll portray She-Hulk, aka Jennifer Walters. A cousin to Bruce Banner, Walters receives a blood transfusion from him and becomes infused with the same powers. The major difference is that when she “Hulks” out, she maintains her normal demeanor.

Why some fans thought Gina Carano wouldn’t have been a good fit as She-Hulk

Before Maslany as cast, some fans thought Carano might be a good choice for the part. Others disagreed. On a Reddit thread discussing her as a possible casting choice, many fans mentioned Alison Brie as a better choice and noted Carano possibly didn’t have the acting ability to pull it off. One fan said:

“…I don’t think Gina has the charisma, acting chops, or gravitas to play a lawyer role, which should be one of the first considerations before anything. She-Hulk doing her day job is going to be one of the focal points of the series, she’s not going to be in hulk form all the time.”

Carano has an impressive physique, but the character of Walters doesn’t look ripped all the time. She has the build of a normal-sized woman. Casting Carano as the She-Hulk and another actor as Walters could have been an option, but in this day and age that would be unlikely. The plan was likely to always use CGI for the She-Hulk scenes.

Now that Maslany has officially been cast, it’s all a moot point anyway. But it’s fairly clear that Carano wasn’t who the fans would want in this role. That’s not to say she can’t end up playing in this sandbox, however. There are plenty of MCU parts to go around.
