‘Girl Meets World’: Peyton Meyer Has Graduated From Disney Channel to ‘Big’ Hollywood
It’s always a little jarring for adults and kids alike to see stars once on Disney Channel TV shows take on more grown-up roles. Peyton Meyer is one of the latest such stars to transition from Disney to what is often known as “big” Hollywood with his more recent and upcoming roles. Learn more about Meyer’s career, what is in store for him in the future, and his previous role on the Boy Meets World reboot, Girl Meets World.
Peyton Meyer’s early career
Meyer has been in the spotlight for nearly a decade, starting when he played Wes Manning on the Disney Channel show Dog With a Blog for nine episodes from 2013 to 2014. The show follows the story of parents adopting a dog for their kids in hopes that it will bring them together, but the siblings later learn that the dog can talk and write. The show ran for three seasons, and it gave Meyer just the start he needed to later land the role he is most known for, Lucas on Girl Meets World in 2014.
IMDb also reports that Meyer starred in the 2016 film Gibby, a family comedy about a teenage girl who finds happiness after spending time with a capuchin monkey. The film also starred Shelby Lyon, and it was met with poor critical reviews, though it is regarded as a wholesome film that kids may enjoy.
After Gibby, Meyer played Ethan in the TV series Versus for six episodes in 2017, a show about two rival lacrosse players placed on the same team who must learn to work together to achieve their goals.
Meyer’s recent roles
Now 22 years old, Meyer just finished his role of Trip Windsor on the ABC sitcom American Housewife, from the second season until the fifth and final one. This show follows the story of Kate Otto as she navigates being a part of a modest family living in a rich and privileged city and dealing with the other pretentious housewives and children in her new neighborhood. Meyer’s character, Trip, became the boyfriend of Kate’s oldest daughter, Taylor.
The show’s filming was halted during its fourth season due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but the show was renewed for a fifth season later that year. The fifth season was shot that summer and aired throughout the final few months of 2020. Unfortunately, ABC decided to cancel the show after five seasons, which led many fans to be disappointed due to the multiple cliffhangers presented in the season five finale, Pop Culture reports.
However, Meyer’s most recent role is Jordan Van Draanen in the upcoming moving He’s All That, a remake and gender-swap of the 1999 movie She’s All That. According to Screen Rant, the movie stars Tanner Buchanan, Addison Rae, and Madison Pettis, another Disney Channel alum. It tells the story of a high school student who accepts a challenge from a fellow student to turn the school’s least popular boy into the prom king.
His role on ‘Girl Meets World’
To many, Meyer is still best known for his role of Lucas on Girl Meets World, which aired from 2014 to 2017. The show was highly anticipated, thanks to the widespread success of Boy Meets World, and it featured several special appearances of cast members of the original show.
Lucas Friar moved from Austin, Texas, to New York City and eventually became the boyfriend of Riley Matthews, Cory Matthews’ daughter. The pair breaks up later in the series, and Lucas begins showing interest in Riley’s best friend, Maya Hart, and the two eventually date but break up. He receives many nicknames on the show alluding to his Southern roots, such as Heehaw, Lone Star, and Huckleberry, from his friends, especially Maya. Many fans adored this character on the show due to his kind and compassionate nature but occasional rebellious streak that kept his character interesting.
