Does ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Have a Post-Credits Scene?
Whether you watch Godzilla vs. Kong in theaters or on HBO Max, you’ll probably stay through the end credits to see if there’s one last scene. Even if there isn’t, you should stay for the credits to see everyone who brought the Godzilla and King Kong battle to life. But, if you want to know before you watch, director Adam Wingard will tell you.
Wingard spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet by Zoom on March 18. He explained what happened to the post-credits tag in Godzilla vs. Kong. The film is now in theaters and on HBO Max.
Why there’s no post-credits scene in ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’
Well, if you’re waiting through the end credits of Godzilla vs. Kong for a little more action, unfortunately, you’re not going to find it there. However, you will still get to see something Wingard filmed for after the credits, but used earlier.
“It’s funny because we actually shot a post-credits sequence but we never actually edited it into the movie,” Wingard said. “We ended up using the footage that we shot of the post-credits sequence, we actually cut it into the film itself.”
The end of ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ means something a little different now
Wingard didn’t spoil the very ending of Godzilla vs. Kong, so Showbiz Cheat Sheet won’t either. However, Wingard did explain that using the footage before the credits gave it a different meaning.
“It used to have a slightly different context to it,” Wingard said. “If I gave that away what the original context was, it would give away a potential sequel idea.”
Indie horror movies taught Adam Wingard how to adapt
Wingard made a name for himself making independent horror films like A Horrible Way to Die. His film, You’re Next, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and got a national release from Lionsgate. He followed up with The Guest before tackling Blair Witch and Death Note for studios. The experience making do with fewer resources paid off in Godzilla vs. Kong.
“All my background as being an innovative filmmaker really does come in handy because you have to be resourceful still here on these big movies,” Wingard said. “We ended up in a spot where we’re like the ending is fine but it needs something else. In the moment, I just was like wait a minute, we have this footage we shot over here. We’re not using it.”
The former post-credits tag did require a little maneuvering to retrofit to the end of the main body of Godzilla vs. Kong.
“We hadn’t even edited it together as a post-credits scene, but suddenly it was like wait a minute, we can turn that with just a little tweak,” Wingard said. “[We’re] putting special effects in it anyway, so it can be whatever you want, and suddenly it’s a different context. That ended up becoming the end of the movie. It’s fascinating how that stuff works out.”
