Golden Globes 2022: Does Lady Gaga Have a Chance at Best Actress?
Since she released “Just Dance” in 2008, Lady Gaga has slowly but surely been taking over the entertainment industry. The Grammy-winning singer flirted with acting throughout the 2010s. And now she’s nominated for Best Actress in a Drama for her performance as Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci at Golden Globes 2022. But does Lady Gaga have a chance of winning the award, given her steep competition in the category?
Lady Gaga earned widespread acclaim for ‘A Star Is Born’
In the mid-2010s, Lady Gaga began to dabble in acting. She played a supporting role in the 2013 action sequel Machete Kills. And the next year, she made cameos in Muppets Most Wanted — appearing as herself, alongside longtime collaborator Tony Bennett — and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. But fans finally got a true sense of what she could do on screen with her performance in 2018’s A Star Is Born.
Yet another remake of the 1937 film of the same name, this one saw Lady Gaga share the screen with Bradley Cooper. He also made his directorial debut with A Star Is Born, and the film was embraced by both fans and critics. The movie earned five Oscar nominations amid a ton of awards love and $436 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. As far as the Golden Globes, Lady Gaga landed a nod for her performance but fell short of a win.
The actor has a lot to overcome at Golden Globes 2022
In 2019, Lady Gaga lost the Best Actress in a Drama Golden Globe to Glenn Close for The Wife. And though Close isn’t nominated in 2022, Olivia Colman — who beat both Close and Lady Gaga to the Oscar — is up for her work in The Lost Daughter. Moreover, Jessica Chastain and Nicole Kidman are nominated for their work as two real-life icons, Tammy Faye Bakker and Lucille Ball, respectively. And both stars are fan favorites among awards bodies.
However, Lady Gaga’s biggest competition will likely be Kristen Stewart. In Spencer, the former Twilight star transforms herself into Princess Diana. And while some moviegoers have yet to appreciate Stewart’s talents, critics and awards bodies have been on it for years. In fact, she has largely swept the critics’ awards for Spencer, a movie with much more support behind it than House of Gucci.
Lady Gaga is already a two-time Golden Globe winner
Lady Gaga might not have the best chances of taking home a Golden Globe in 2022. But she does already have a pair of the awards in her possession. Even before making her proper big-screen debut, Lady Gaga won the Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film for her role as The Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel in 2016.
Likewise, though she didn’t win for her performance in A Star Is Born, Lady Gaga did earn a Golden Globe for that movie. She took home the Best Original Song trophy for her song “Shallow.” Lady Gaga and Cooper memorably performed that track on stage at the Academy Awards soon thereafter, where the song won the Oscar as well.
