Golden Globes 2022: ‘Dopesick’ Hulu Actor Michael Keaton Won — Could There Be a Season 2?
After Michael Keaton’s Golden Globe 2022 win for Best Actor in a Television Motion Picture in Dopesick, more viewers tuned to Hulu to watch. The events depicted in Danny Strong’s miniseries reflect the real-life distribution and marketing of OxyContin by Purdue Pharma. After watching the 8-episode series, many viewers want to know what happens next. Is a Dopesick Season 2 in the works at Hulu?
Golden Globes 2022: ‘Dopesick’ — 3 nominations, 1 win
On Jan. 9, 2022, NBC did not televise the 2022 Golden Globes. Instead, the organization quietly announced the winners via their social media outlets. Although the Golden Globes aren’t as prestigious as fans believe, Dopesick on Hulu is worth watching. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominated Dopesick for Best Television Motion Picture. They also nominated Kaitlyn Dever for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Motion Picture for her role as Betsy Mallum. However, the only award that Dopesick won at the Golden Globes was handed to Michael Keaton for Best Actor in a Television Motion Picture for his role as Samuel Finnix.
The 8-part Hulu series, Dopesick, is based on Beth Macy’s nonfiction book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America. As an executive producer on the series, Macy ensured that the portrayal of the opioid epidemic in America was accurate. The series creator Danny Strong also felt strongly about keeping the story’s roots as accurate as possible. That’s part of the reason why the Dopesick cast filmed in rural Virginia.
‘Dopesick’ Season 2 has potential
Since the real-life events depicted in Dopesick Season 1 end in 2007, there are plenty of stories to cover in a potential season 2. In an interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet, the series creator Danny Strong discussed Dopesick Season 2 in November 2021.
“I’m not sure yet,” Strong told the outlet when asked if there might be a season 2. “I’m not closed-minded to it. I don’t know. There haven’t been any discussions about it yet, but there’s certainly a lot of events that occurred post-2007 that could potentially be a season 2. I haven’t deep-dived into it enough to know if I can even pull it off. But we’re just still kind of waiting to see how this goes.”
The interview with Strong occurred before the series concluded its weekly run on Hulu. It also happened before Dopesick garnished a win at the 2022 Golden Globes. With the series gaining new viewers daily, its potential for a season 2 continues to grow.
