For those who had been pining for that Next Great Mafia Series, Italy’s Gomorrah appeared to deliver the goods upon its 2014 release. And, slowly but surely, the tale of the Neapolitan organized crime world made its way to America. But for years U.S. audiences only had the first two seasons on Netflix.

Weinstein Co. legal troubles explained why, as of late ’19, Gomorrah fans still hadn’t caught up with season 3, which aired in Italy two years earlier. The launch of HBO Max came with encouraging news on this front. In July ’20, fans learned that WarnerMedia had acquired the series for the U.S.

Though it took another six months or so for Gomorrah to find a place in its new U.S. home, the series did arrive on HBO Max in January ’21. At this point, fans can stream the first three seasons of the show on the premium service.

While HBO Max comes with a high price tag ($15 per month), you have to give the streaming service credit for its wealth of material. On top of its own original series, the network has delivered a strong lineup of foreign films (including several by Fellini) and series.

That list includes Basque Country drama Patria (2020) and Gomorrah. To date, HBO Max has only rolled out seasons 1-3 of Gomorrah, but the 12 episodes of season 3 have been a godsend for fans of the show.

For those just getting into Gomorrah, the show’s first three seasons should supply months of top-notch entertainment. And at the end of all that, many will be asking themselves the question die-hard Gomorrah fans have been asking for years: When does the next installment arrive?

We know season 4 already aired in Italy. When the season 4 premiere dropped in 2019, Gomorrah attracted more than 1 million viewers in its native country. And the season wrapped up by May ’19. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it will arrive on HBO Max soon.

Though Gomorrah Season 4 has been ready to air since ’19, HBO Max chose to not release that latest installment when it premiered season 3 of its entirety in January ’21. At time of writing, it’s unclear when the streaming giant will bring out the latest season.

It will arrive, though. As The Hollywood Reporter reported in July ’20, HBO Max has the rights to all four seasons of Gomorrah. The network also has the rights to The Immortal (2019), the Marco D’Amore-directed companion film that serves as a bridge between seasons 4 and 5.

Regarding season 5 of Gomorrah, that installment was filming in Italy in ’20 but had to shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (Filming resumed in early ’21.) HBO Max also has the right to that season, which has been rumored to be its last. In the meantime, U.S. audiences have those first three seasons of Gomorrah to enjoy on HBO Max.
