As we dive into season 4 of NBC’s Good Girls, one thing is clear — Ruby, Beth, and Annie are in serious trouble. Not only are they being investigated by the Feds, but the ladies are also dealing with Rio’s ongoing deadly threats.

It’s not an easy situation to get out of unscathed. But according to Good Girls showrunners, Annie is going to do something selfless and significant as the season continues.

So could that mean Annie will sacrifice herself to save Beth and Ruby? It is a real possibility.

How much trouble are the ‘Good Girls’ in?

Beth (Christina Hendricks), Ruby (Retta), and Annie (Mae Whitman) have been in trouble before. But season 4 of Good Girls finds the ladies on the radar of Phoebe Donnegan (Lauren Lapkis), an FBI agent dead set on exposing their crimes.

Phoebe’s investigation led her boss, Dave (Jonathan Silverman), to entrap Dean (Matthew Lillard) and arrest him for masterminding the hot tub money laundering scheme. The agents don’t know that Rio (Manny Montana) is the real criminal running the show. And Phoebe is desperately trying to prove that Beth, Annie, and Ruby are the ones committing the crimes.

Meanwhile, Rio is continuing to pressure Beth into cleaning his money. But with Dean in jail and the Feds on her back, she will have a hard time doing anything, let alone counterfeiting money.

Annie’s trying to do better in ‘Good Girls’ season 4

Unlike her destructive behavior in the past, this season, Annie seems much more grounded. And in a recent chat with EW, Good Girls bosses Bill Krebs and Jenna Bans confirmed Annie would continue to evolve as the season unfolds.

“Annie is going to go on a personal journey,” Krebs revealed. “In seasons 1, 2, and 3, it was a lot about Annie’s impulsiveness and recklessness and her making bad decisions. Season 4 is now about Annie self-actualizing and kind of growing up.”

“This is the season that Annie learns to sort of be an adult and know that there’s consequences to all those bad decisions, and maybe she doesn’t need to have a guy in her life and maybe she doesn’t have to always live so impulsively,” he added. “She makes amends for all her wrongs in the past — not just with her relationships with men, but also with her own sister, and that kind of gets her in hot water.”

Will Annie sacrifice herself for Beth and Ruby?

When talking to TV Line, Bans and Krebs hinted Annie would make a huge sacrifice this season. “Whereas the other women might find themselves devolving, in a way, through their relationships, and through the criminal enterprise, Annie uses Season 4 as a way to grow up,” said Krebs. “She always makes the bad decision, so what’s it like to make the right one? What does life look like when you actually think responsibly and self-actualize?”

“And it affects so many aspects of her life, in terms of her romantic relationships and even her relationship with Beth,” Bans added. “It affects it in a positive, surprising, and sacrificial way. Annie is sort of redeemed by the end of Season 4, and she lands in a place no one will ever see coming.”

If Annie tries to make amends, as the showrunner suggested, she could potentially turn herself in to the authorities to save Dean, Beth, and Ruby. But it’s still early in the season, and there’s a lot that could happen. Fans will just have to wait and see how things pan out.
