‘Good Sam’ Made a Subtle but Hilarious Reference to a ‘One Tree Hill’ Scene With Sophia Bush
It wouldn’t be a true reunion of the One Tree Hill ladies without an Easter egg from their teen drama days. Sophia Bush, Bethany Joy Lenz, and Hilarie Burton Morgan came together on Bush’s CBS medical drama, Good Sam, for the first time since One Tree Hill — a real treat for dedicated OTH fans. And those fans who tuned into the March 23 Good Sam episode may have noticed a hilarious reference to a One Tree Hill moment involving a garden hose.

‘One Tree Hill’ stars Sophia Bush, Bethany Joy Lenz, and Hilarie Burton Morgan reunited on ‘Good Sam’
Burton Morgan and Lenz guest starred on Good Sam as sisters Gretchen and Amy Taylor, respectively. When Amy began showing signs of premature heart disease, Gretchen took her to Lakeshore Sentinel Hospital in Detroit. There, she received treatment from Bush’s Dr. Sam Griffith. After further examining Amy, Sam discovered that her stomach had actually been brewing its own alcohol and intoxicating the patient.
Speaking to BuzzFeed, Bush revealed that the One Tree Hill reunion on Good Sam started with their Drama Queens podcast. Bush, Lenz, and Burton Morgan came together in June to launch the new series, in which they rewatch One Tree Hill and discuss each episode. The actors also have guest interviews and share behind-the-scenes secrets.
“I was doing press for Good Sam, and because of Drama Queens, everyone was asking if Hilarie, Joy, and I would ever act together again and if I’d have them on Good Sam,” Bush said. “So, [writer] Katie [Wech], my sweet angel of a boss, listened to all of the press I did for Good Sam before the premiere, heard me talking about wanting Hilarie and Joy to come play, and sent me the script.”
‘Good Sam’ referenced a scene with Sophia Bush’s ‘One Tree Hill’ character involving a garden hose
Good Sam featured a scene where Amy entered a “drunk” state due to her medical condition. She became disoriented and mistook Dr. Griffith for someone she thought seemed familiar.
“I passed out on your lawn, and you sprayed me with a hose. That was so mean of you,” Amy said.
Bush’s Dr. Griffith didn’t spray anyone with a hose on Good Sam, but Brooke Davis did on One Tree Hill. In season 3 episode 20, “Every Day is a Sunday Evening,” Brooke approached her frenemy, Rachel Gatina (Danneel Harris), while Rachel was washing her car. She unexpectedly sprayed Rachel with a hose as revenge for mistreating Brooke’s close pal, Mouth (Lee Norris).
The reference on Good Sam might have confused One Tree Hill fans at first since the altercation didn’t actually involve Lenz’s Haley James Scott at all. However, Bush took to Twitter to confirm that it was an Easter egg for that scene. Harris may not be a co-host on Drama Queens, but she has still joined Lenz, Bush, and Burton Morgan on a few occasions.
“We had to throw some [Drama Queens] love at [Danneel Harris],” Bush wrote.
The 3 ‘One Tree Hill’ stars acting together is ‘like a tornado,’ they said
In an interview with Variety, the three actors admitted they were nervous at first to do their first on-screen project together in so many years. However, Bush, Lenz, and Burton Morgan immediately fell into their old chemistry.
“Hilarie always says that it feels like a tornado when the three of us are together,” Bush explained. “There was, I think, pent-up excitement and decades of friendship energy that just came in with us in this cloud of excitement and happiness. And it was such a riot.”
New episodes of Good Sam premiere on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
