With a stage name inspired by one of New York City’s streets, Halsey grew up just outside of Manhattan in Edison, New Jersey. Although they have since moved out of the Garden State, this musician sometimes shares her experience growing up with “Jersey Devil” stories and Taylor Ham, egg, and cheese sandwiches.

Halsey (birth name Ashley Nicolette Frangipane) collaborated with The Chainsmokers on “Closer” and BTS for “Boy With Luv.” They’re an activist, even going viral for their speech at the 2018 Women’s March. Recently, Halsey debuted the album If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.

Before she was a chart-topping musician, though, Halsey spent time in Edison, New Jersey. During her Hot Ones segment, Halsey ruminated on her New Jersey roots. Notably, the artist shared what she misses most about living in the Garden State.

“Taylor Ham, or bacon egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich,” Halsey said, referring to the iconic sandwich enjoyed throughout the state. (Although some “South Jersey” residents refer to Taylor Ham as pork roll.)

Does Halsey have a New Jersey accent?

Halsey has since left her New Jersey home and traveled across the country performing. As a result, if she had a New Jersey accent, she has since lost it. However, she did notice that people pronounce things in the state.

“Probably the funniest thing about New Jersey is the way people say Italian foods,” Halsey noted during the Hot Ones interview. “If something ends with a vowel, you take the vowel off.”

She mentioned iconic Italian foods like mozzarella, prosciutto, and calamari, all of which they said without the ending vowels. Halsey was also asked about her experience with the Jersey Devil, who she confirmed lives in the Pine Barrens. The artist said they traveled to the “Gates of Hell” in Clifton, New Jersey, although she couldn’t remember her experience at the location.

Halsey wouldn’t be the only award-winning musician raised in New Jersey, as several other artists mentioned their love for the Garden State. Kevin, Joe, and Nick Jonas of Jonas Brothers grew up in Wyckoff.

To celebrate his home state, Jack Antonoff of Bleachers even writes songs about growing up in the “Shadow of the City,” hosting an annual music festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Of course, legendary artists like Bruce Springsteen made New Jersey their home.

As of January 2021, Halsey reportedly purchased Liam Payne’s Calabasas, California home, where she spends most of her time. The artist even attended one of BTS’ Permission to Dance on Stage concerts, which took place in Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium.

Halsey will return to New York City as a headliner for the 2022 Governors Ball Music Festival. Until then, music by Halsey is available on most major streaming platforms.
