Now that Koracick is returning to the series, many fans want to know how long he will stay. Well, the talented neurosurgeon will be back for one episode. However, the doctor won’t be strolling the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial. While the medical staff is recovering from an unexpected explosion, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) team up with a familiar face in Minnesota. Meanwhile, the returning character will assist them with an ongoing study.

Why did the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ actor leave the series?

In Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Tom Koracick was diagnosed with COVID-19. In turn, he’s confined to a hospital bed for several weeks. While he’s in the hospital, he revealed that all six of his roommates died from the virus – they were all men of color.

After Koracick recovered from the virus, he wanted to change his life around. So, he decided to leave Seattle with Jackson and help minorities receive better medical care.

“I just felt like I owed it to them to be better because of chaos and injustice and pain,” he said. “The world is only that way because we let it be, or because people who look like me made it that way. So what I’m saying…let me become worthy of being spared.”

He continued, “I want to be an ally. I want to spend whatever time I’ve got left making this lousy, stinking place better. I’ll operate, I’ll administrate, I’ll do anything. I don’t want money. I don’t want a title. Just let me help.”

Shortly after, Koracick left Grey Sloan Memorial with Jackson and April Kepner (Sarah Drew).

In an interview with Deadline, actor Greg Germann talked about his departure from the medical drama. “To have worked with all the incredibly talented people involved with Grey’s over the past few years has been such a privilege. A big thank you to the fans as it has truly been a shared experience!”

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
