It’s been a hot minute since Grey’s Anatomy viewers saw April Kepner (Sarah Drew) and Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) happily in love. The pair shared an extraordinary romance together. However, Japril fans were shattered when April left the Shondaland series. So how did Drew really feel about April and Jackson’s ending on Grey’s Anatomy? Recently, the actor revealed how she would’ve wrapped the couple’s story.

Why Jackson Avery and April Kepner did not end up together on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

There’s no denying Jackson and April went through the wringer on Grey’s Anatomy. The couple fell in love, got married and divorced, experienced the death of Samuel Norbert Avery, and welcomed Harriet Kepner-Avery to the world. Of course, those are just the footnotes. But regardless, April and Jackson didn’t end up together.

At the end of Grey’s Anatomy Season 14, April rekindled her romance with Matthew Taylor (Justin Bruening). April previously left Matthew at the altar to be with Jackson. However, April and Matthew eventually reconnected, started dating, and got married. April also left Grey Sloan Memorial to provide medical care for homeless communities in Seattle. So technically, the character is still around offscreen and co-parents Harriet with Jackson.

Sarah Drew says she wanted Jackson and April to be endgame on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

When Drew left Grey’s Anatomy in 2018, the actor revealed she was “devastated” by April and Jackson’s ending. However, she didn’t discount April and Matthew’s reunion.

“In the midst of it, I was devastated that Jackson and April wasn’t an endgame,” Drew told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. “I thought Jackson and April were meant to get back together and they were going to get married again and realize they’d been crazy and it was just going to be this long, slow burn.”

She added, “But there was something beautiful about the redemption story between April and Matthew. She hurt him worse than anybody had ever hurt him by walking away from him [at their wedding]. For there to be reconciliation from that scenario? That’s a really beautiful redemption story that there could be forgiveness there. He lost his wife and then finds his first love again. It’s lovely.”

Now, it seems Drew still wishes Jackson and April could’ve ended up together. When speaking with Entertainment Tonight in November 2020, Drew shared how she would’ve changed April and Jackson’s story on Grey’s Anatomy.

“Look, I’ve said this so many times. If it had been up to me, they would’ve been endgame,” Drew said of the couple. “But it’s not up to me.”

Grey’s Anatomy is currently in its 17th season. So naturally, viewers are wondering whether Drew will ever return. Still speaking with Entertainment Tonight, the actor answered whether she thinks Jackson and April still have more stories to tell. But ultimately, the decision isn’t up to her.

“You are going to have to ask the writers,” Drew said. “I don’t know, I can’t answer any of that.”

Drew also pointed out that the Grey’s Anatomy team hasn’t reached out for April’s return. But she’d be willing to come back if given the chance.

“Nobody’s asked me to come back,” Drew said. “I can’t answer that. All I’ll say is that I love my family over there. So I would never say no to the possibility. But you know, it hasn’t presented itself.”
