‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Camilla Luddington Explains What It Was Like to Give Birth During COVID-19
Grey’s Anatomy star Camilla Luddington announced the birth of her second child on Aug. 25, 2020. She also gave fans insight into what it was like to be pregnant and give birth during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
What did ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Camilla Luddington name her baby?
Camilla Luddington and husband Matthew Alan announced on Instagram that their second child was born. The couple named their baby boy Lucas Matthew Alan.
“After what felt like a year-long third trimester … it finally happened!!” the Grey’s Anatomy star wrote on Instagram. “Matt and I are SOOO happy to announce the birth of our sweet baby BOY, Lucas, otherwise known as my little lion 🦁 (shoutout to Leo’s!).”
Their son joins big sister Hayden at home, who is 3-years-old. She is very excited to have a baby brother.
Lucas “was the only boys’ name my husband and I ever really liked,” Luddington told People. The name “topped our boys’ name list back when I was pregnant with Hayden.”
Luddington gave insight into being pregnant during the COVID-19 pandemic
“Our family has been isolating since March, which has come with its own challenges, but the upside is that it gave us a lot of time to be able to prepare,” the actor explained. “Once I hit 37 weeks, I was willing him to come. Our bubble feels complete now that he’s here.”
This pregnancy was very different from her first because of the ongoing health crisis.
“I absolutely had more daily anxiety,” she told the outlet. “Not only did I have concerns over contracting COVID and what that could potentially mean for my pregnancy. I was also worried about things like my husband not being able to be present with me during the birth.”
Luckily, Alan could be in the room with Luddington, but he wasn’t allowed to be at any ultrasounds.
“It changed a lot of the experience for me this time around,” she reflects.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Camilla Luddington didn’t realize she would have to wear a mask
Although Luddington is used to wearing a mask on Grey’s Anatomy, she was not happy she had to wear one during labor.
“It just wasn’t something I had thought about, and when I found out I would have to, I cried,” she admitted. “I completely understood the importance of wearing one; I just dreaded it. Labor is so physically exhausting I couldn’t imagine adding a mask.”
However, while Luddington was in labor for over 15 hours, she “honestly forgot” that she had the mask.
“I didn’t feel like ripping it off, but I was thankful they allowed us to remove them for a short time to capture some after-birth pictures without the masks on,” she explained.
The star will return to Grey’s Anatomy for season 17 this fall.
