‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Could Get Rid of Another Character Soon: ‘We Haven’t Had a Death In a While’
Grey’s Anatomy‘s 17th season began airing this past fall, and it has been keeping fans and viewers on the edges of their seats.
Not shying away from the tragic and tumultuous times, the well-known medical series has been sharing meaningful and powerful messages through their take on reality, the global pandemic, and everything in between.
Bringing some of these issues close to the series’ home, Meredith Grey, the show’s beloved main character, has spent the better part of this season battling COVID-19. One silver lining of Grey’s conditions and current storyline is that her near-death state has created an interesting opportunity for the doctor to interact with Derek Shepherd. Derek, otherwise known as McDreamy and the love of Meredith’s life, unexpectedly died in season 11, and speaking of death, fans and viewers of Grey’s Anatomy seem to sense one in the near horizon.
Taking a look back at the most noteworthy deaths to take place on Grey’s Anatomy, it is hard to know where to begin. As longtime fans and viewers of the ABC series already know, Grey’s Anatomy and death go hand-in-hand. Plenty of characters have “kicked the bucket”, but some of them hit a little harder than others.
The tragic death of George O’Malley
George O’Malley was one of the first and most famous deaths the series had seen. When George threw himself into traffic to save the life of a pedestrian he ended up at the Seattle hospital he was interning at, but due to his extensive injuries, his identity wasn’t revealed right away.
Using an inside joke, Meredith figured out it was O’Malley when he used his fingers to relay the message “007” in his grave state. Unfortunately, George’s character did not make it and much of the cast’s storylines reflected the pain and struggle that came with mourning George.
Chandra Wilson, an actress and director for Grey’s Anatomy shared that George’s death was the saddest episode for her. Wilson followed up that Mark Sloan’s passing was a close second.
Mark Sloan and the infamous and fatal plane crash on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
Mark Sloan was the charming and talented doctor played by Eric Dane in the series. Sloan was known for his BFF status with Derek Shepherd, his close and unique relationship with Callie Torres, and, of course, his unrequited love story with Lexie Grey.
Sadly, Sloan would eventually die from the injuries he sustained in a fatal plane crash that took place during season 8. It was this same plane crash that took the life of Lexie Grey. The devastating event is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to tragedy and death on Grey’s Anatomy.
What are some fans and viewers of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ saying about a potential upcoming death?
The current season of Grey’s Anatomy has left audiences to wonder about the fate and wellbeing of Meredith Grey. Though it probably seems unlikely that the show’s main character’s journey would come to an end like this, many people think this is the perfect time for the series to take action and kill someone off.
A Reddit thread showcased the comments and conversations that shared some fans’ beliefs that the show could actually benefit from some death.
One comment in the discussion read, “time for people to go and we havent had a death in a while. wont hurt to see catherine die and that way jackson and richard will be doing SOMETHING. like it would affect the foundation so jackson would take carr of that + his mom died and richard would lose his love.”
Catherine or Richard could be considered easy targets due to their older age, but, given the current conditions and episodes, anything seems possible.
