‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Fans React to BokHee Speaking in Heartbreaking Surgery Scene
Grey’s Anatomy has one real medical professional in front of the camera. That’s Kathy C. An, who plays a nurse named BokHee. She rarely speaks, but the newest episode shows her character saying something during a heartbreaking surgery.

A victim of a hate crime is brought to Grey-Sloan on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
“Stronger Than Hate” shows most of the surgeons at Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) house for a dinner party to welcome Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman). But Meredith stays at the hospital. A beaten-up woman is brought in after she is attacked at a bus stop. She’s Asian American, and the attacker yelled at her to go back to where she’s from.
Meredith started working on the patient along with orthopedic surgeon Nico Kim (Alex Landi). Later in the episode, he does surgery on the patient with BokHee, and they all talk about their experiences as Asian Americans.
“When I was a kid, I used to stare at my face in the mirror wondering if I could use my mom’s makeup to make me look more American,” Michelle Lin (Lynn Chen) said before saying that only meant more white.
“You wanted to be like all the other kids,” Nico added. He then asked if they’ll ever not be seen as foreign? BokHee chimed in, “We are American. Your face is American.” The episode ended with the team saving their patient.
Fans react to BokHee speaking in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
It’s very rare for the nurse to actually speak. So it’s not surprising that fans reacted to her emotional moment on Reddit.
“‘We are American. Your face is American.’ We Stan a Queen! Second episode she has had lines in!” a fan commented.
“Now they remember Bohkee,” one person wrote.
“OMG I LOVE WHEN THEY GIVE BOHKEE LINES,” someone else commented.
“WHYS BOKHEE GOT ME TEARING UP RN,” one fan asked.
“I haven’t heard Bokhee speak in a long time until now,” another person noted.
“Tell ’em Bokhee, I know that’s right,” one fan cheered.
The nurse usually is in scenes supporting the surgeons. But there are episodes where she’s given lines to cement big moments.
One of BokHee’s rare lines is ‘Wonder Woman’
“I Want a New Drug” shows Meredith doing surgery on a frozen abdomen. She started the surgery the day before, and it’s possible she’ll beat the record for the hospital’s longest surgery. Other doctors watch to see if she’ll do it.
BokHee is later there as support. Everyone claps for Meredith the moment she beats the hospital’s record. Meredith tells Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) to update the patient’s family. As he leaves, he says, “OK. I’m gonna tell them their son’s being saved by a surgical legend.” Meredith tells him no. “Surgical superhero?” he asks. “No,” Meredith says. “Wonder Woman?” BokHee asks. “Thank you, BokHee,” Meredith says.
That was in season 16. Chances are fans will have to wait for some time to hear her speak again.
