‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Fans Still Can’t Get Over Alex and Cristina’s ‘Irreplaceable’ Chemistry
Any show that lasts for any length of time on TV will do so based on the strength and chemistry of its characters. Grey’s Anatomy is no different.
The series has been able to succeed for years in large part thanks to the amazing rapport the characters have with each other. Two of the characters fans enjoyed watching together the most? Cristina Yang and Alex Karev. Let’s take a closer look at those two and why fans thought they had “irreplaceable chemistry.”
‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Who is Cristina Yang?
Portrayed by Sandra Oh, Cristina was trained at Grey Sloan, according to the show’s wiki. She is currently a researcher and Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at another facility known as the Klausman Institute for Medical Research. Previously, she had been married to Owen Hunt before getting engaged to Preston Burke.
She’s also known as Meredith’s “person,” also known as a best friend and trusted confidante. The show helped catapult Oh to stardom. Since then she’s also starred in the show Killing Eve. Prior to starring in Grey’s, she had a prominent role in the film Sideways.
Who is Alex Karev?
According to the show’s wiki, Alex served as the former Chief of Surgery at Pacific Northwest General Hospital. He also served as the head of pediatric surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial. His ex (and later, partner) Izzie Stevens and he have a pair of twins named Alexis and Eli. Before he learned about the twins’ existence, he was married to Jo Wilson.
It’s Alex’s relationship with Izzie that comes to define the character. After they break up, it’s him finding out the two have twins that brings them back together. It’s also the plot point that facilitated Alex’s exit from the show. Izzie (portrayed by Katherine Heigl) had previously left the show as well. Alex going to join her was the perfect cover for actor Justin Chambers to exit the show. Like Oh, he departed the program, paving the way for a new generation of actors to join the cast. After so many seasons on the air, it’s no wonder the series has lost many of its greatest talents throughout the years.
While both Oh and Chambers have left the show, that doesn’t stop fans from reminiscing about their time together. They worked well together in a way that hasn’t quite been duplicated since.

Grey’s fans took to Reddit to talk about the show and in particular, one scene where Alex left Cristina speechless. It’s a scene where she’s insulting another character, and Alex correctly points out that Meredith, himself, and Cristina all have something in common with her. Fans chimed in to talk about how much they loved the scene, but also Alex and Cristina together. One poster said it best:
“Some of the most brilliant dialogue and character writing in the show came when those 2 interacted. It wasn’t that often, but their chemistry is irreplaceable.”
There’s no denying that there was certain magic whenever Alex and Cristina were on camera together. That’s part of what makes the show so great. While Meredith is the focal point of the series, it wouldn’t be nearly as great without the supporting characters who create the show’s foundation.
The show is known for its romance, humor, and drama, but also for its smart, realistic dialogue. Some of the best lines went to Alex and Cristina, especially when they were paired together. Many characters have come and gone in the ensuing years, but as one person pointed out, Alex and Cristina’s relationship had an undefinable quality that cannot be replaced to this day.
