ABC announced the return of Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew for the Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 finale, to reprise their roles as Jackson and April. As exciting as that is, Japril fans want to know what that means for Jackson Avery and April Kepner. However, the pair was last seen in Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, moving to Boston, not as a couple. Are Jackson and April endgame now?

Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew return for ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 18 finale

The Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 finale on May 26 brings back two fan-favorite cast members — Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew. Deadline exclusively broke the news of the return for Jackson Avery and April Kepner. Williams departed the series after 12 seasons in May 2021.

The last time Drew, and Williams appeared together in Grey’s Anatomy was in the May 6 episode, “Look Up Child.” Jackson went to April’s house to tell her that he planned to move to Boston to take over the Avery Foundation. He wanted her to come along so that he could still be close to their daughter, Harriet Kepner-Avery. To Jackson’s surprise, April dropped news of her own. April and her husband, Matthew (Justin Bruening), have separated, and she was more than willing to make the move.

Now, Deadline exclusively reports that Jackson and April return to Grey’s Anatomy to give fans an update on their status one year later.

Are Jackson and April back together in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’?

The clues that Grey’s Anatomy dropped in past seasons point to a Jackson and April romance. April Kepner departed the series in season 14 when she married Matthew. She felt more connected to him because of their faith. However, in Grey’s Anatomy Season 15 Episode 7, Jackson told Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) that he found God during his visit to see his father.

“The one thing that April and I could never see eye to eye on was God,” Jackson told Maggie in Grey’s Anatomy Season 15 Episode 7. “She believed, and I never could. Now that I do, now that I really do, it’s too late. She’s married. She’s happy with someone else.”

However, in the next episode, Jackson finds out that April is no longer happily married. That’s only one of the speeches that prove Jackson was not over April. In another Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 episode, Jackson attempted to talk some sense into Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.). However, it sounds a lot like he was talking to himself.

“You’re still not yourself,” Jackson told Richard. “You’re not even fighting for your damn reputation or your career, Richard, ’cause your wife isn’t here. Why is that? ‘Cause you sent her away. I know with all of my being that you need to get over this stubborn ego, stubborn pride, and go call and claim the woman that you love, ’cause you’re not gonna get over it. And you’re damn sure never gonna get over her.”

The Grey’s Anatomy writers planted many seeds that Jackson was not over April throughout the past few years. Will Japril finally be back together when they return? Viewers have to wait and see if Jackson Avery and April Kepner are endgame during the Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 finale on May 26.

Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew both hope that Jackson and April get back together

After Williams’ departure from Grey’s Anatomy in May 2021, he revealed his thoughts about Jackson and April.

“I think it’s pretty possible that he rekindles a romantic connection to his ex-wife,” Williams told Deadline. “They’re damn good together, but most importantly, what he needs from that is friendship and kindness, and patience, and understanding, and I think that he will get that with her and be able to share and give and reciprocate it as well.”

Drew admitted that she always hoped Jackson and April would be endgame to various outlets.

“We’re leaving it up to the audience to come to whatever conclusion makes them happiest,” Drew told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2021. “I’ve never been shy about wanting Japril to be endgame; it’s what I wanted the whole time. One of my biggest heartbreaks leaving in season 14 is that they didn’t get to be endgame. But who knows what happens when they make their way to Boston.”

All signs point to Jackson and April as an official couple when viewers see them in the Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Finale on May 18, 2022. However, we will have to wait and see what happens.
