‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Kai Wins Points With Amelia Over This Question About Derek
It seems like everyone on Grey’s Anatomy knows who Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) is. But the new episode showed Dr. Kai Bartley (E. R. Fightmaster pronouns they/them) asking Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) an important question, which won her over.

Amelia is Derek Shepherd’s little sister on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
Derek was an original character on Grey’s Anatomy. He was a superstar in neurosurgery and fell in love with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo).
His little sister, Amelia, was introduced on Private Practice. She agreed to take a case even though Derek’s ex-wife Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) was also on it. She then appeared on Grey’s Anatomy.
In the beginning, Derek and Amelia weren’t speaking, but they reconciled after someone shot him. Amelia became close with Meredith after she married Derek, who died in season 11.
Kai wins points with Amelia over this question about Derek
“Today Was a Fairytale” opened with Dr. Hamilton (Peter Gallagher) coming to work with a sprained hand. He claimed that his symptoms were progressing and demanded that Meredith make progress quickly to have surgery.
Meredith took a break while Kai (pronouns they/them) and Amelia continued to work in the lab. They talked about why they chose their careers. Kai said their mother would have loved for them to be a clinical doctor. But they are drawn to discovery and don’t have patience for patients.
Kai then asked Amelia why she chose neuro. “No one ever asked me that,” she said. “They just assumed that it’s ‘cause I wanted to be like my brother.” Kai asked, “Who’s your brother?” Amelia said, “You just became my favorite person.”
Amelia and Kai have a breakthrough with their research
The episode showed Amelia and Kai doing everything they could to brainstorm to fix their problem. All of that talking and walking worked.
They came up with a sample that reached the FDA requirements of being viable. They cheered and realized they might actually cure Parkinson’s disease. Hamilton also started to regret how he treated Meredith and hoped he didn’t scare her off.
Amelia and Kai walked out together. Kai brought up Amelia’s love of neuroscience. But Amelia voiced her doubt that she was actually good at what she does. “The way I see it, as you fell in love with neuro when you were four, or wherever the secret feelings came from, and you still love it,” Kai said. “Your eyes light up when you look at brains, even the plastic ones. And you’re unrelenting, you don’t settle, and that’s what matters when you break new ground.”
Kai asked Amelia out for drinks, but she had a flight to catch. It looks like the pair are growing even closer by talking about their love of medicine.
