This season of Grey’s Anatomy has been a wild ride. Just as we have been dealing with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the real world, the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial hospital have been trying to find ways to cope with the pandemic as well. Though Meredith Grey was put on a ventilator before the season 17 midseason finale, fans were shocked when another fan favorite died in last night’s spring premiere.

Dr. Andrew DeLuca’s death on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 17

During last night’s crossover event with Station 19, Dr. Andrew DeLuca went on a chase to catch the sex trafficker that he had let get away earlier in the season. At the end of the episode of Station 19, DeLuca was stabbed. After his initial surgery, he seemed fine but later he crashed and ended up on the operating table once again.

While being operated on, DeLuca’s soul ended up on the beach that seems to be the inbetween place between life and death. Meredith has been stuck on the beach for almost the entire season.

“I don’t regret it,” DeLuca told Grey on the beach. “We walk through our lives and we witness atrocities, see homeless people in the street asking for help and we just walk right past them. We see people who can’t pay for medicine for their children. We see people beating their kids and say, ‘It’s none of our business.’ We see atrocities on the news every day. Crimes and cruelties committed by our government, paid for nonetheless by our tax dollars. And what do we do? We just change the channel.”

He went on to say that he didn’t regret chasing the sex trafficker, even though it put his life in danger.

“What you did, Meredith, risking your medical license to save that little girl, that makes sense,” he said. “And what I did — following that women and not letting her get away with it, not letting her get away, not letting her harm another single human being. Yeah, it was dangerous, but it made sense. It’s the only thing that made sense. So I don’t regret it.”

DeLuca made peace with his life before dying

As the beach scene went on, DeLuca seemed to make peace with everything that had led him up to that moment.

“I don’t know what happens from here, Meredith,” he said. “No matter what happens, I want you to know that I’ve never felt seen the way you saw me. I’ve never felt inspired the way you inspired me. You made me want to be not just my best self, but better. And yeah, I felt small around you sometimes. I felt insecure. I wanted something from you that I needed to give myself. But here, now, on this beach with you, I get it. I don’t just get it, I feel it. I know who I am, my strength.”

Later, DeLuca’s deceased mom showed up and he ran off with her as the doctor’s called his time of death in real life.
