Is ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ New Tonight, May 13? The Next Season 17 Episode Will Be Emotional
The last Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 episode on May 6 left fans heartbroken, and the next chapter will surely bring on more emotions. But it looks like the ABC medical drama has something special planned before airing the final three episodes of the season. So why isn’t Grey’s Anatomy new tonight, May 13, 2021? Here’s what to expect from the rerun from season 2 and when the Shondaland series returns with episode 15.
Why ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Station 19’ aren’t new tonight, May 13, 2021
According to ABC’s schedule, Station 19 Season 4 and Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 will lose their time slot tonight, May 13. But it’s not all bad news. While Shondaland fans will miss out on new episodes this week, the network will air a major two-part repeat episode of Grey’s Anatomy.
Starting at 8 p.m. ET, ABC will air Grey’s Anatomy Season 2 Episodes 16 and 17, titled “It’s the End of the World” and “As We Know It.” Then an all-new episode of Rebel will be released at 10 p.m. ET.
What to expect from the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ rerun, ‘It’s the End of the World/(As We Know It)’
If you’re new to the Grey’s Anatomy fandom, “It’s the End of the World/(As We Know It)” is also known as the bomb episode. The monumental season 2 episode, which originally aired after Super Bowl XL in 2006, highlighted Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) life back when she was still “dark and twisty” and Grey Sloan Memorial was called Seattle Grace. The synopsis says:
“Meredith’s fears that she is in for a bad day are realized when a medical case arrives at Seattle Grace that threatens the lives of everyone in the O.R. Then, despite the best efforts of the Seattle Grace staff, the code black situation escalates on Grey’s Anatomy.”
Meanwhile, a Grey’s Anatomy Season 2 rerun means fans will see old cast members, such as Sandra Oh (Dr. Cristina Yang), T.R. Knight (Dr. George O’Malley), Katherine Heigl (Dr. Izzie Stevens), Justin Chambers (Dr. Alex Karev), Isaiah Washington (Dr. Preston Burke), Kate Walsh (Dr. Addison Montgomery), and Patrick Dempsey (Dr. Derek Shepherd).
The Grey’s Anatomy episode also includes two of the most memorable guest stars, Christina Ricci and Kyle Chandler, who played Hannah Davies and Dylan Young, respectively.
Now, the Grey’s Anatomy bomb episode is one of the most-watched episodes of the Shondaland series. Then in a recent interview with Forbes, Walsh opened up about the “once-in-a-lifetime experience” of “It’s the End of the World/(As We Know It).”
“[My favorite Grey’s Anatomy episode] was the bomb one, a Super Bowl episode which kind of put us on the map,” Walsh said in May 2021. “The series was such an incredible experience in so many ways. To be on something that was critically acclaimed, and also very popular globally, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
When does ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17 return for episode 15?
While Grey’s Anatomy fans will go down memory lane on May 13, the next all-new episode of season 17 will air in one week. So the show will return on Thursday, May 20.
As you may know, Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 15, “Tradition,” will serve as Jesse Williams’ (Dr. Jackson Avery) final episode. So Jackson will say goodbye to his colleagues at Grey Sloan. Then Tom Koracick (Greg Germann) and Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) will work together to save a pregnant woman’s grandfather while she goes into labor.
Meanwhile, Meredith is awake. But now, Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) have to tell Meredith about Andrew DeLuca’s (Giacomo Gianniotti) death. So Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) keeps a close eye on her sister.
Given everything that’s happening in Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 15, it might be time to break out the tissues. This one’s going to be an emotional journey. Stay tuned.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursday nights on ABC. “It’s the End of the World” and “As We Know It” are also available to watch on Netflix.
