‘Grey’s Anatomy’: This Nick Marsh and Meredith Grey Fan Theory Will Make You Watch Season 18 Differently
We’re a few episodes into Grey’s Anatomy Season 18, and many fans still aren’t sure what to make of Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman). The romance is blossoming outside of Grey Sloan Memorial, and some viewers have become curious about the endgame plan. A Grey’s Anatomy fan theory about Meredith and Nick even questions whether the new love interest is actually real. Here’s a breakdown of the theory.
A quick recap of Nick Marsh and Meredith Grey in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 18 so far
Initially, Nick and Meredith met in Grey’s Anatomy Season 14. Speedman’s character is a transplant surgeon from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and he collapsed while retrieving a liver at Grey Sloan Memorial in Seattle. As it turned out, Nick was a kidney transplant recipient himself. But luckily, Meredith was able to save his kidney. The two also hit it off right away.
Meredith and Nick reunited in the Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 premiere. Dr. David Hamilton (Peter Gallagher) recruited the general surgeon to cure Parkinson’s disease at the Grey Center for Medical Research, which is inside of the Mayo Clinic. Then, Meredith ran into Nick at a restaurant, and the two reconnected.
Now, Meredith is going between Minnesota and Seattle in season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy. She’s also been able to lean on Nick for support, and the two have gone on a few dates. Then in episode 6, Meredith and Nick finally hooked up during the Thanksgiving holiday when the Grey Sloan doctor was stranded in Minnesota because of snow.

For now, Grey’s Anatomy fans will have to watch how Nick and Meredith’s story progresses as season 18 continues. But some fans found it strange that Speedman’s character has only interacted with Meredith.
“Does anyone else feel like Nick Marsh is a hallucination by Mer this season?” a viewer wrote on Reddit. “He has only appeared when she is alone and has not been acknowledged by anyone else.”
The Grey’s Anatomy fans also theorized that Meredith’s hallucinations of Nick could be a “symptom of early onset Alzheimer’s,” which is another popular fan theory.
Meanwhile, a Reddit user questioned the original post, noting that a hotel concierge told Meredith to meet Nick at the bar in the premiere. But another fan pointed out that the concierge didn’t directly reference Nick. Rather, the hotel staff just told Meredith he would show her to the bar.
Other fans felt Meredith and Nick’s relationship is normal
That said, it’s possible the Grey’s Anatomy team is just trying to set up Meredith and Nick as a couple before introducing them to other characters. In a separate thread on Reddit, a fan wondered why Nick hasn’t met Meredith’s friends and family. But other users noted that this was just normal behavior, considering the relationship is fairly new.
“Mer’s relationship with Nick is her own, is still new, and they only see each other while she’s in Minnesota,” a viewer wrote.
Whether you believe Nick and Meredith are just taking things slow or the team is tackling Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) 2.0, there are still plenty of storylines to look forward to in season 18.
