‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Will Owen Hunt or Cormac Hayes Die? Some Fans Think Kevin McKidd and Richard Flood Are Leaving Soon
On Dec. 16, ABC will release the Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 winter finale, and many fans are worried Richard Flood and Kevin McKidd are leaving after Cormac Hayes and Owen Hunt die. But are the two characters actually in danger of being killed off in the next new episode? Here’s what some viewers predict will happen and other possibilities for the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial – aka Seattle Grace Mercy Death.

The ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 18 Episode 8 promo hints Owen Hunt and Cormac Hayes might die in a car accident
In the trailer for Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 8, “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” Megan Hunt (Abigail Spencer) cries over her son, Farouk Hunt (Bardia Seiri). Then Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) reveals there’s a heart that’s a match for Farouk. So Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) seemingly sends Owen to get the heart by car, and Hayes says he wants to go.
In the middle of the transport, the driver appears to have a medical emergency. “Sir, are you OK?” Owen asks before the driver completely passes out, and the car swerves off the road. Then at the end of the teaser, the aftermath of the accident is shown. The car is completely crushed in the middle of the woods. But will anyone end up dead or will everyone survive? We’ll have to wait and see.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fans on the possibility of Kevin McKidd and Richard Flood leaving because of Owen Hunt and Cormac Hayes’ deaths
When the Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 8 promo dropped, many fans theorized whether anyone would actually be killed off. In a thread on Reddit, some viewers brought up all the characters in danger within the trailer, including Farouk, Owen, Hayes, and the driver. But, for the most part, it seems like many fans believe the preview is just a red herring. And many viewers think the person most likely to die is Owen and Hayes’ driver, and some even believe that David Hamilton (Peter Gallagher) could die because he’s in Seattle.
Meanwhile, other Grey’s Anatomy fans speculated that the accident won’t result in a death, but it could still result in someone leaving.
“Personally, I don’t think that Hunt will die, but I agree that the stage is being set for his exit,” a fan wrote on Reddit. “Between a near-death experience and his veterans project, I could definitely see him leaving the hospital to dedicate himself to helping veterans. I just hope that Teddy will go with him! Lol”
Who doesn’t get killed off in the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 18 winter finale
Grey’s Anatomy fans will have to watch what happens to Hayes, Owen, and the rest of the Grey Sloan crew. But in July 2020, Deadline reported that McKidd signed a three-year contract to stay on the show, along with Raver and Camilla Luddington (who plays Jo Wilson). So for now, it seems unlikely McKidd will be leaving as Owen right away. However, anything could happen.
That said, whatever happens in the season 18 winter finale, we know that one person is safe. On Dec. 16, Luddington confirmed that her character isn’t involved in the tragic car accident, and it’s unlikely she will die in the midseason finale.
“Jo is not in the accident tonight,” Luddington told E! News. “But her love life is a car wreck. So that’s an accident waiting to happen.”
Luddington also confirmed that the accident will impact some of Grey’s Anatomy’s main cast members. Then when asked whether anyone will die in the new episode, the actor played it coy.
“We’re worried every episode. We also get worried,” Luddington said. “You’ll have to wait and see. It’s a massive, massive accident.”
