‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Sarah Drew’s Recent Instagram Has Fans Asking About April Kepner’s Return
Grey’s Anatomy fans are always wondering whether Sarah Drew (April Kepner) will return to the hit Shondaland series. Then recently, the actor shared a cryptic post on Instagram. Now, some viewers are wondering whether Drew is coming back in Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 — here’s what she said.
Sarah Drew left after ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 14
Drew played April on Grey’s Anatomy for nine seasons. Then in March 2018, ABC confirmed Drew would be leaving the show alongside Jessica Capshaw, who played Arizona Robbins. In a statement, showrunner Krista Vernoff hinted that the decision came down to the show’s creative direction.
“The characters of Arizona and April are permanently woven into the fabric of Grey’s Anatomy thanks to the extraordinary work of Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew,” Vernoff said, per Deadline. “As writers, our job is to follow the stories where they want to go and sometimes that means saying goodbye to characters we love.”
Drew also opened up about her Grey’s Anatomy exit during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “[Being let go] was painful when it happened,” she said. “But, in retrospect, I think it would have been hard for me to walk away from that job. I was on it for nine years. It feels right and it feels like a good time to move on to something else with all the great love in my heart that I have for everybody and respect and gratitude for what that experience was.”
Meanwhile, April departed Grey Sloan Memorial when Drew left Grey’s Anatomy. But don’t worry, the character didn’t die. At the end of season 14, April decided to quit her job and provide medical care for homeless communities in Seattle. She also found her happily ever after with Matthew Taylor (Justin Bruening) and co-parents Harriet with Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams).

It’s been a few years since Drew appeared as April on Grey’s Anatomy. But recently, the Shondaland series delivered a few incredible cameos. In Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) returned in a dream sequence with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). So naturally, most viewers are wondering who will come back next.
Meanwhile, Drew shared a new Instagram post that has many Grey’s Anatomy fans asking about the possibility of April’s return. The actor recently came back home from working on Freeform’s Cruel Summer in Dallas, Texas. Then Drew teased another project and tagged LA hairstylist Christina M️eneses for freshening up her red hair.
“Just started working on something I can’t wait to share with you all,” Drew wrote on Instagram. “@xtinameneses came over to freshen up my color!! So happy to be home from Dallas with my kiddos and my hubby!!!”
Now, Drew didn’t specify what she was working on. So at this point, it could be completely unrelated to the ABC medical drama. But even so, many Grey’s Anatomy viewers are hoping Drew will see April again soon.
“That is some April red,” a fan commented on Drew’s Instagram post.
Another fan wrote, “Please be coming back as April Kepner!!!”
Would Sarah Drew ever return as April Kepner on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’?
Whatever happens as Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 continues, it appears Drew is willing to come back as April. Back in November 2020, the actor revealed she wasn’t asked to return for the new season. However, she would consider reprising her role if the opportunity ever arose.
“Nobody’s asked me to come back,” Drew told Entertainment Tonight. “All I’ll say is that I love my family over there. So I would never say no to the possibility. But you know, it hasn’t presented itself.”
As Grey’s Anatomy fans know all too well, nobody knows where they might end up. So we’ll just have to wait and see whether the writers have more stories to tell when it comes to April. Stay tuned.
