Teddy and Owen were supposed to get married in Grey’s Anatomy Season 16. But Teddy started hooking up Tom while she was still engaged to Owen. Then at the start of Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Teddy’s relationships with Owen and Tom were up in the air.

Tom was devastated when Teddy revealed she still wanted to be with Owen. Meanwhile, Owen was distraught when he found out about the cheating. He also walked away from Teddy when she admitted she named their daughter after the love of her life, Allison Robin Brown (Sherri Saum), who died on 9/11.

When Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 came back for its spring premiere, Teddy and Owen had to work together again to save Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti). Then when DeLuca died, Teddy was distraught. The two surgeons were working hard to save Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) life. So after DeLuca passed, it became all too much.

Throughout Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 8, Teddy kept seeing DeLuca around Grey Sloan Memorial. Of course, the hallucinations indicated something was wrong with Teddy. Then at the end of the all-new episode, Teddy attended DeLuca’s memorial — but she never left. Owen found the cardiothoracic surgeon alone as she stared off into the abyss. He scooped her up and took her home.

The ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17 Episode 9 promo trailer teases what’s next for Teddy and Owen

The Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 9 promo trailer jumped right into the next all-new episode on March 25. Owen revealed Teddy hasn’t spoken or eaten. So if nothing changes, he’ll have to have her hospitalized.

As the Grey’s Anatomy preview continued, Teddy was spotted in a dream state. She blamed herself, and the promo hinted that it’s all about DeLuca’s death. There was even a scene between Teddy and DeLuca. “What if it’s not too late?” Teddy said.

Meanwhile, Owen hinted at what’s happening with Teddy — and it looks like Grey’s Anatomy fans should be worried about the Cardio God. “The only other time I’ve seen that kind of look — it’s in soldiers,” Owen said. “Plenty of them never came back.”

Finally, the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 trailer wrapped with a moment between Teddy and Meredith. “Hey, Altman. Is everything OK?” Meredith said from her hospital bed as the teaser went dark.

Ahead of the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 spring premiere on March 11, Raver opened up about a new episode featuring Teddy’s journey. While the actor admitted she was “upset” with her character, she also hinted that fans will get some answers.

“Look, I know that the fans are very upset with me. I’m very upset with Teddy,” Raver said on Live with Kelly and Ryan. “I have to say there’s a really big episode coming up, which is incredible. Kevin McKidd directs it. It’s sort of the whole journey and explanation, and it really gets into why Teddy is behaving the way that she has.”

Meanwhile, Raver shut down a Grey’s Anatomy fan theory that suggested Teddy is actually an “evil twin.” Then the actor reminded viewers that the characters don’t have to be perfect all the time. She also hinted at what’s happening with Teddy on Grey’s Anatomy Season 17.

“We are not perfect now, granted that’s a really bad side of Teddy,” Raver said. “But I think it’s about the journey of us being human and uncovering why we act out in certain ways.”

She continued, “I think that Teddy has PTSD. She’s never really acknowledged it. She’s had such incredible loss in her life, and the grief has just compounded over the years because she’s been caring for so many other people. So it sort of just explodes. That’s not an excuse for her bad behavior, but I think it is a way to understand that she needs to heal.”

Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 airs Thursday nights on ABC.
