‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17: Will Owen Forgive Teddy? Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd Weigh In
On March 25, Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 dove headfirst into Teddy Altman’s (Kim Raver) backstory, which included her romance with Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). In the all-new episode, the Cardio God faced her past traumas for the first time. Now, it seems the character is ready to move forward. But what does this mean for Teddy and Owen’s relationship on Grey’s Anatomy? Raver and McKidd shared their thoughts on the storyline.
What happened to Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17?
At the start of Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Owen confronted Teddy about cheating with Tom Koracick (Greg Germann). Teddy apologized and ultimately picked Owen over Tom. Understandably, this was something an apology could not fix.
As time went on, Owen told Teddy he didn’t want to continue “punishing” her, especially since they had a family. But then Teddy admitted she named their daughter, Allison, after the love of her life who died on 9/11. She also questioned whether Allison (Sherri Saum) was connected to the cheating. However, Owen just felt even more betrayed.
Finally, viewers learned more about Teddy’s trauma in Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 9. When the character lost her parents, she ran from that pain and moved on to Allison. Then the cycle continued with Owen, Henry (Scott Foley), and Tom.
That said, she never dealt with her feelings. So when Teddy’s close colleague, Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti), died on top of the crushing pressure of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Teddy hit rock bottom. But now, it seems the character realizes she needs to take a step forward.
Kim Raver opens up about Teddy and Owen’s relationship after ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17 Episode 9
While Teddy confronted her past in the new episode of Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Owen discussed their future with Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone). Amelia told Owen that he couldn’t “afford to spend every day hating” Teddy. And ultimately, she hinted that Owen needs to forgive Teddy. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the couple should get back together.
Meanwhile, Raver previously hinted that she still has hope for Teddy and Owen. “They’ve been through so much together,” Raver told Entertainment Tonight ahead of episode 9. “I’m always secretly hoping they work it out.”
Then after the new Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 episode, Raver teased Owen and Teddy’s relationship in an interview with Shondaland. The actor revealed the couple’s future will be “interesting” because of the possibilities moving forward.
“It’s exciting because now we can springboard into a whole new place,” Raver said. “Maybe we both can take ownership of our not-so-good behavior and find out are we even compatible? Can we actually love one another in a healthy, intimate way? Won’t that be fun if it’s them, for the first time, wooing each other?”
The actor continued, “I think that that opens the door for such a beautiful way forward. And if the audience can forgive, it’s going to be a fun journey ahead.”
Kevin McKidd on Teddy in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17
Still speaking with Shondaland, McKidd shared his thoughts on Teddy as Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 moves forward. But ultimately, the actor and director believes the character will start making conscious decisions.
“Teddy and Owen have been operating from this unconscious place of trauma probably since Iraq,” McKidd said. “It’s almost like this whole episode is not so much a dream, but it’s about Teddy’s inner soul, if you will, going through this crucible of rebirthing herself. … Instead of living making unconscious decisions, she’s moving into a place of being intentional and conscious.”
Now, Grey’s Anatomy fans must wait and see how Teddy and Owen are able to move forward in season 17. But whatever happens next, it seems their new story is just beginning. So stay tuned.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 airs Thursday nights on ABC.
