Every good show must come to an end. It’s sad to see our favorite TV shows go after years of devotion. But everyone wants to know where major characters will be and who they’ll end up with, despite the finality of never seeing a new episode again. Recently, Grey’s Anatomy fans have been impatiently awaiting a final season any day (or year) now.

The big question is, what will the ending look like? Many fans have some creative theories. One, in particular, isn’t very positive and has other fans fearing its possibility.

Meredith in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Meredith Grey is Chief of Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital on Grey’s Anatomy. She isn’t an easy character to describe; she’s a myriad of love, loss, and every other dramatic event a single human can experience. Despite the ridiculous amount of difficulties she’s faced, Grey is going strong as Grey’s Anatomy reaches a potential finale in the coming years.

The best description of Meredith and her impact at both Grey Sloan and with her fellow doctors is represented in season 14, episode seven. Jackson Avery accepts Meredith’s Harper Avery award on her behalf and gives a heartfelt speech about her. He says:

“The most amazing thing about Meredith, though, is that she takes all that pain, all that loss and she turns into drive. Drive to save lives, to make things better. And despite all that she’s lost, she continues to find joy in her work as a surgeon, as a teacher, as a mother. And she managed to share that joy through her spirit of discovery and of possibility and of hope, right in the face of darkness.”

Popular fan theories surrounding the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ finale

Many theories circulate the web about Grey’s Anatomy’s potential ending and what fans think may happen. The popular show’s ending will devastate many viewers after 15 years of devotion. But many are impatient to see what’s in store for its ending and Meredith’s future. Of the many creative and happy fan theories surrounding the potential finale, three stood out.

First, one Reddit user expressed their dream for the ending. They hope that Richard retires and all former cast members, like fan-favorites Christina, Arizona, and Izzie, return for his retirement party. When these people come back, viewers can enjoy flashbacks and updates on their families and lives. Then everyone dances — a more traditional, predictable wrap-up to a series.

Another Reddit user predicts “there will be some sort of flashforward where we see MerDer’s kids (or at least Zola) as doctors at Grey Sloan and maybe even the kids of other characters starting their residencies (Sofia, Harriet, etc).” It’s a theory many can get on board with since it ends on a positive note.

Almost along the same lines, beccabug45 predicts, “Alex is Chief of surgery and Zola is an intern,” listening to Alex’s rendition of Richard Webber’s infamous first speech in season one, episode one. This possibility could work in contrast to the pilot episode.

A popular theory leaves Meredith where her mother ended up

On the other hand, some fan theories aren’t nearly as happy. And it has fans chomping at the bit. If you recall, Meredith’s mother was discovered to have developed early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and later dies. Grey’s Anatomy season nine reveals to fans that Meredith tested positive for several genetic markers for Alzheimer’s. It’s supporting a theory that some Redditors are saying could be “a really bad and sloppy ending to the show.”

The heartbreakingly popular theory is that Meredith is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the end. Rhysieroni says, “I think it ends with Mer being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and we see a grown-up version of Zola or one of the other kids finding her journals, which are her voice-overs that she does every episode.”

If the ending leaves Meredith where her mother ended up, the finale will break a lot of hearts. Sometimes a simple happy ending can sit better with fans.
