‘Grey’s Anatomy’: These Are the Episodes That Made Fans Hate Meredith
Grey’s Anatomy has put it’s fans on an intense emotional roller coaster since it’s first episode aired back in 2005. Since then, every character on the show has had to deal with great highs and defeating lows. Throughout all of the things that each character has done on the show, no character has made as many controversial decisions as the main character herself, Meredith Grey.
For the most part, Meredith is a fan-favorite. However, even though she is the most beloved character, she has still made some decisions throughout the series that have caused fans to feel nothing but anger towards her. Here is a few of the episodes of Grey’s Anatomy that made fans hate Meredith Grey.
1. ‘Sympathy for the Devil’
The episode “Sympathy for the Devil” originally aired on January 15, 2009. In this episode, a convicted murderer is brought into the hospital with severe head trauma that he sustained from getting into a fight while he was in prison. After his examination, Dr. Derek Shepherd realized that the prisoner has severe damage to his brain and will more than likely die soon if he doesn’t have an operation.
Derek and Christina want the patient to get the surgery so that he will be forced to live the rest of his life in prison. However, Meredith has a talk with the convict and starts to feel sorry for him and instead, wants him to die in the hospital. Christina and Derek express their frustration to Meredith, telling her that if they let him die in the hospital, he will basically be escaping his punishment.
When Derek asked Meredith to sign a form to consent to the surgery, she refused. Christina ended up signing the consent form and the convict ended up getting the surgery. But fans were very frustrated with Meredith for sympathizing with a murderer.
2. ‘A Change is Gonna Come’
In the first episode of the fourth season, Meredith is introduced to her half-sister while she is working at the hospital. Lexie Grey made an appearance at the end of the last season when she flirted with Derek Shepherd at a bar, but she didn’t introduce herself to Meredith until season four.
Lexie came to the hospital as a new surgical resident. When she first introduced herself, Meredith was understandably frazzled and didn’t act like she wanted anything to do with her estranged sister. However, as the series progressed, Meredith didn’t really seem to warm up to the idea of becoming friends with Lexie.
Unfortunately, Lexie ended up dying in a plane crash a few seasons later. And while Meredith and Lexie were starting to become closer before her death, fans were never able to truly forgive Meredith for missing out on so much quality time with Lexie when she was still alive.
3. ‘How to Save a Life’
Season 11, Episode 21 “How to Save a Life was one of the most gut-wrenching episodes of the entire series. In this episode, Derek is involved in a fatal car crash that leaves him brain-dead.
After the crash, Derek is rushed to the hospital and immediately put on life support. After Meredith talked to the doctor who was treating him, it was determined that the best course of action would be to take him off of life support and allow him to pass away peacefully.
The relationship between Meredith and Derek was one of the most iconic love stories that the show had ever created. Because fans loved this couple so much, and loved Derek’s character, it was one of the hardest episodes that fans had to set through.
While it was sad to watch, there was parts that were frustrating for fans as well. Especially the part where Meredith did not call Derek’s family to let them know that he was on life support and about to die.
Fans had come to expect Meredith’s character to shut people out of her life, but shutting out Derek’s family during his last few minutes on Earth was something that fans did not see coming.
