‘Grey’s Anatomy’: What Happened to Amelia’s First Baby Christopher
For those Grey’s Anatomy fans who did not tune in to the show’s spin-off, Private Practice, Amelia Shepherd’s (Caterina Scorsone) response to her newfound pregnancy may have come as a big shocker. But what some fans might not realize is that Amelia has been in this position before — and the results were pretty heartbreaking. So what really happened to Amelia’s first baby, Christopher?
A look at Amelia’s first pregnancy
In the fifth season of Private Practice, Amelia promised to quit drugs after a scary relapse with her boyfriend. But during a final drug binge, Amelia’s boyfriend overdosed and passed away.
To make things even more complicated, Amelia soon discovered that she was pregnant with her boyfriend’s child. That’s when the heartbreak really started.
As if things could not get any worse, Amelia found out that her baby, whom she named Christopher, was suffering from an underdeveloped brain. The doctors told her that Christopher would not survive long after the birth.
After processing the terrible news, Amelia decided to donate Christopher’s organs to help other babies. Although his life was short, the tragedy devastated Amelia and is something she is obviously still overcoming.
As Grey’s Anatomy fans will recall, Christopher’s death was something that cropped up during Amelia’s brief marriage to Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd).
According to Distractify, Scorsone opened up about how Christopher’s death affected Amelia during her relationship with Owen. The actress revealed that Amelia had a difficult time talking about her son’s passing and had trouble even speaking his name.
“[She] had a lot of trauma from the loss of baby Christopher that she hadn’t processed,” Scorsone shared. “Before (she and Owen) broke up, she wasn’t even able to say his name out loud, let alone share her pain with anyone, including Owen.”
Fortunately, a lot has changed for Amelia, which should help her now that she’s expecting another baby.
Scorsone opens up about Amelia’s new pregnancy
It has been seven years since Christopher’s death rocked Amelia’s world, and she has gone through a major healing process since her split from Owen. This includes openly talking about her son’s death and actually going through the grieving process. It also helped that Amelia is co-parenting Owen’s son, Leo, whom he adopted.
In fact, the Grey’s Anatomy star admitted that talking about Christopher has been an “incredibly healing” experience for Amelia. She also added that “a lot of Amelia’s fear and trauma was healed” while she was helping to raise Leo.
With Amelia now expecting, this is definitely good news. Not only should she be able to overcome her fears, but it sets her up to become an amazing mom. But will the baby’s father, Link (Chris Carmack), stick around for the journey?
Link promises to support Amelia on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
While Amelia can clearly handle the pregnancy on her own, Link has promised to stick by her side through the birth.
In a recent interview, Scorsone revealed that Amelia and Link are both on the same page when it comes to their child, despite their romance still being in the early stages.
The actress added that the characters are very adventurous and are definitely open to the idea of raising the baby together. Considering everything Amelia has been through, she could definitely use an extra hand.
She also admitted that Amelia might be in love with Link, though it could also be the hormones directing her feelings. Either way, she was clearly moved by Link’s vow to support her and we cannot wait to see how their relationship grows.
Whether or not their romance works out in the long run is yet to be seen. But they are definitely getting off on the right foot.
Scorsone dishes on playing a pregnant character
Scorsone recently shared that playing a pregnant Amelia on Grey’s Anatomy is much different now that she has a child of her own.
The actress is a proud mother to a daughter named Paloma, who is now two years old. With her own experiences to draw from, Scorsone explained how she understands Amelia’s fears more and can relate on a whole new level.
This should translate to an excellent performance on Grey’s Anatomy as Amelia prepares to be a mother for a second time around. Hopefully, things do not end with another tragedy and Amelia’s birth goes off without a hitch.
New episodes of Grey’s Anatomy air Thursday nights on ABC.
