‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Who Is Maggie’s Cousin—Richard’s Niece—Sabie (Sabrina)?
Out of nowhere, Maggie (Kelly McCreary) has a cousin she never knew. On the November 7, 2019, episode of Grey’s Anatomy, a new patient shows up at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital, claiming to be a relative of both Maggie and Richard Weber (James Pickens Jr.). Let’s take a look and see who this new character is. Warning: Season 16 Spoilers.
Why does Sabie look so much like Maggie?
The new cousin, Sabie, on Grey’s Anatomy is actually Kelly McCreary’s sister in real life, Crystal McCreary.
Kelly McCreary announced the news recently on Instagram. She wrote, “Many of you may know my sister @cmccrearyyoga as a woman of many gifts and talents — a writer, a speaker, an educator, and a leader in the wellness and mindfulness community— but you probably didn’t know that she is also an actor!”
She continued on, “Crystal and I have walked our artistic paths separately for a long time, and we finally had an opportunity to work and play together for the very first time.”
Crystal also took to Instagram to voice her excitement over the opportunity, “A dream come true does not quite give the entire experience of us acting together for the first time justice.”
The two sisters were both enthralled to finally have the chance to work together on-screen.
What does Sabie—Crystal McCreary—do in real life?
Crystal is a Yoga teacher by day. She went to school at Stanford University where she received her B.A. in African and African-American Studies.
The sister also leads Yoga Alliance certified teacher training as well as professional development workshops. She speaks internationally about the importance of yoga for the mind and body.
She was excited to get back to acting and join her sister at the same time. She wrote on Instagram, “When I got the call to go on tape for @greysabc, I didn’t sleep for three days!! I had to whip out my drama school toolkit, get grounded, do my best work, and of course, call my sister!!!”
She continued on, “I am so dang grateful for the opportunity to act side by side with @seekellymccreary (a beast of an actress for those who don’t know) who stars on the show, and she had my back every step of the way.”
She was very happy to have this special acting opportunity on Grey’s Anatomy with her sister.
Will Crystal McCreary ever guest appear on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ again?
Richard was shocked to see his cousin, but very welcoming. He hadn’t seen her in a very long time because of his estranged brother.
“Sabie is welcoming, forgiving and kind and I turned my back on her,” Richard told Gemma (Jasmine Guy). He was disheartened that he lost all of that time with his niece.
Sadly, she won’t be able to make another guest appearance on the show—unless its a flashback—because her character died at the end of the episode. We will likely see a funeral and many mentions of Sabie, but she won’t be there in person.
You can catch new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy Thursday nights at 9 p.m. on ABC.
