Grimes Defends Elon Musk’s SpaceX Project as the ‘Key to Our Survival’ as He Plans to Depart for Mars in 10 Years
The Canadian-born singer, Grimes, has been in an on-and-off relationship with the world’s wealthiest man, Elon Musk, since 2018. The pair have two young children together. Being so closely linked to such an influential person can come with needing to sift through quite a bit of criticism. To the surprise of some of her fans, Grimes has things to say in defense of the father of her children.
Grimes defends Musk
Vanity Fair reports that as soon as Grimes appeared at the Met gala in 2018, she started losing fans. It was like the culture had to split on the idea of this coupling. Here is a previously known anti-capitalist music artist in a relationship with a multi-billionaire businessman. Grimes’ Instagram became a dumpster fire of comments and messages. She would get on social media to defend Musk but it often didn’t go well.
Despite the hate Grimes may get on social media, Grimes is more than capable of defending Musk when needed. And defend she does. She points out, “He’s done more than any other private citizen to wean the planet off fossil fuels. He helped protect internet service in Ukraine by making his Starlink satellite terminals available.”
About Musk’s current project, the goal of putting humans on Mars, Grimes “… is baffled that so many people view his Mars ambition as some billionaire’s boondoggle, rather than the essence of being human and maybe, just maybe, the key to our survival.” Business Insider reports that the SpaceX CEO thinks we will put humans on the surface of Mars by 2029.
Grimes wants Musk to stay on earth longer
It was when Grimes was pregnant with their first child, X, that Musk casually mentioned in a conversation with a friend that he planned to depart for Mars in 10 years. Grimes froze at such a prospect. She said, “I was like, ‘Uhhh … could we make it 20?”
While being interviewed by Vanity Fair, Musk said, “It wasn’t new information. I’ve been saying since before she was pregnant that I was going to Mars.”
Grimes is still shocked that Musk hopes to land on Mars so soon and she’s trying to convince him to stay on Earth at least a little bit longer. Even so, Grimes still plans to go to Mars with Musk at some point too. She said, “I will probably go when I’m, like 65 or so.”
Grimes knows that going to Mars will not be like a leisurely cruise to the Caribbean. She explains, “There’s not gonna be any makeup or Postmates. It’s definitely gonna suck. And definitely early death for sure.”
Is the prospect of harsh life on Mars worth it to Grimes? Absolutely. She says, “I’d rather die trying to do something impossible and maybe failing than just keep releasing cute pop songs.”
Grimes wrote a song about the Mars journey
Fans assumed “Player of Games” was about Grimes’s rumored breakup with Musk. In reality, the now broken-up couple was welcoming their second child via surrogate and still spending time together. The truth is that the song is about space travel to Mars because Grimes believes in the mission that much.
“The thing is, I live and die by the mission. I believe in the mission,” Grimes said. When she says ‘mission’ she is referring to, “Sustainable energy, multi-planetary species. The preservation of consciousness.” About her dedication to the mission of Mars exploration, she says she is “ready to die with the red dirt of Mars beneath my feet.”
