‘grown-ish’ is in its third season on Freeform

grown-ish follows Zoey (Yara Shahidi) the daughter of black-ish‘s Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross), now that she is in college.

Shahidi stars alongside fellow series regulars Trevor Jackson as Aaron Jackson, Jordan Buhat as Vivek Shah, Emily Arlook as Nomi Segal, Francia Raisa as Ana Torres, Chloe and Halle Bailey as Jazz and Star Forster, Deon Cole as Charlie Telphy, Luka Sabbat as Luca Hall and Diggy Simmons as Doug.

In season 3, Zoey has dropped out of school to focus on her budding career in fashion. The description of Thursday night’s midseason return reads: “After dropping out of Cal U and diving into her dream job, Zoey balances the demands of her work life and her personal life while on tour with Joey Bada$$. Jazz and Doug struggle with the rules of their relationship ‘pause.’”

Saweetie will play Indigo on ‘grown-ish’

For Saweetie, joining the show was an easy decision. She’ll play a musical artist named Indigo, who is the protege of Joey Bada$$’s character. “I’ve always been a fan of acting and it [this role] was something that was randomly brought to me, but when it was brought, I improved so quick,” she said in an interview. “I was like, get me in there [laughs]. I love Yara. And I [was] trying to be on the show because I feel like it’ll be a great segue into my acting career. So I really just think the cast for being patient with me and working with me and they were so helpful.”

The rapper-turned-actress also teased what’s to come this year for her outside of grown-ish and what we know already about her music.

“I would say more acting, more fashion, a lot more hits, pretty much music. Icy university classes are coming on in February..more of The Icy Life [YouTube series]. We just started season 3. I mean, there’s so much going on in Icy World, so it’s fun…it’s informative…it’s just all things that, that makes Saweetie [be] Saweetie. So I think this is a year that everyone will get to know me better.”

What another cast member says

As far as surprising storylines, series star Trevor Jackson believes that Nomi’s pregnancy storyline will still shake things up for viewers.

“I definitely think Nomi’s pregnancy was something that I was like ‘Woah…such a real concept that isn’t talked about much especially in college.’ So to see that happen, even just as a viewer, I was like this will be an interesting story turn, how she will cope, and all those things.”
