‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’: James Gunn Shares His Filmmaking Process With Storyboards
If fans did not believe that filmmaking is a long, tedious process, they do now. The director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, James Gunn, took to Twitter recently to show just how thorough he has been while making the third film. And if his tweet is any indication, fans should prepare for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to be a wild ride.
James Gunn shares photo of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ storyboards
James Gunn shared a photo of a stack of storyboard cards for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on Twitter. The caption read, “Stack of hand drawn storyboards I just finished from the past few days for #GuardiansoftheGalaxyVol3. This represents 12 pages of script & will be the foundation for this section of the film. Designing the film like this is the most important part of my job at this point.”
Storyboards provide a visual outline of the film and can be one of the most vital parts of the preproduction process. The storyboard cards are drawn-out images that show every shot in a film. The director also usually leaves notes on these cards for other production members, like costume designers and production designers. However, Gunn is unique because he draws up his own storyboards instead of using a storyboard artist.
According to Collider, Gunn responded to a fan who commented on his post. He said, “Every shot in my movies is hand drawn first. That’s at least 2,500 shots or so per my recent films. Many of the shots – about 1/3 – take anywhere from 2 to 10 cards or more – because I’m drawing the movement. So I probably end up with about 3,000 cards.”
Gunn is definitely more thorough than most with his storyboards. But, in the end, his dedication usually pays off. Hopefully, the same can be said with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
What does Gunn’s post mean for the MCU film?
The fact that Gunn’s huge stack of storyboard cards for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is only for 12 pages of the film’s script is a bit jaw-dropping. This could indicate that the action in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is unlike anything fans have seen before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The action will most likely be at an all-time high for what could be the final Guardians of the Galaxy film. And since action scenes are super intense and involve many moving parts, it makes sense that Gunn’s storyboards for this film are quite detailed.
Also, Gunn’s tweet indicates that they are close to starting production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. We can cue the fan excitement right about now.
Everything we know about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’
As with most Marvel Studios projects, not much is known about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s plot. What we do know is the happenings behind the scenes.
As mentioned before, James Gunn is directing the film and writing the script. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, and Karen Gillan will all be reprising their roles from the previous Guardians of the Galaxy films. Many of the actors are also expected to make an appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder, which premieres on May 6, 2022. So, it’s entirely plausible that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will pick up where the fourth Thor film left off.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will premiere in theaters on May 5, 2023.
