One of the most interesting space romances since Han Solo and Princess Leia is the one between Gamora and Peter Quill (Star-Lord) in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. What makes it unique in the annals of sci-fi is Gamora’s past self became her present self in Avengers: Endgame, essentially erasing her death that occurred in Avengers: Infinity War. As a result, it led to past Gamora not having any clue she had a romantic relationship going with Peter Quill.

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, we saw Quill and his fellow Guardians searching for Gamora who was also seen witnessing Tony Stark’s funeral. She didn’t know who Stark was either, making her essentially an amnesiac due to a very twisted time-travel scheme.

Now there’s a joke going around about who Gamora might link up with romantically after a sly comment by Nebula.

Gamora’s romance was mentioned in ‘Avengers: Endgame’

Those of you who saw Avengers: Endgame may know that when Quill tried to rekindle his romance with the past Gamora, latter considered Quill as nothing but a creepy stranger. She ultimately kicked him in the crotch as a result, leading to a big romantic problem on how to fill her in on her prior romance.

At least Quill wasn’t about to give up, hence he and his Guardians going on a search for Gamora after she disappears. Most fans think Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will focus on Quill and Gamora reconnecting, despite latter having to relearn how to fall for him. After Quill was kicked by Gamora, though, she turned to her sister asking: “Him?” Nebula made one hilarious comment: “It was either him, or a tree.”

One could assume Nebula was just being sarcastic there. Then again, it seems she doesn’t really compute on being sarcastic or even being funny. Maybe she really meant an allusion to Groot.

Now a lot of MCU fans are running with a theory Gamora will pick Groot over Quill as a love interest to perhaps prove past selves don’t end up repeating history.

A Russo brother said jokingly, or seriously, supported a new romance

If you happen to have the Blu-Ray edition of Avengers: Endgame, you no doubt heard the insightful commentary track by the Russo Bros. At one point, Joe Russo makes a point of saying he’d find it interesting to see Gamora link up romantically with Groot instead.

Would Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 really run with this plot idea, or was it just Joe Russo being ironically facetious?

Nobody really seems to know, and that’s probably the point. Considering wacky humor is a big part of the Guardians franchise, perhaps they really will go there as a new romantic twist.

This also brings up a major debate not many people have brought up: Whether Quill having a romance with alien Gamora in the first place is really ethical. Then again, this isn’t the Star Trek universe we’re talking about here.

How would a Gamora and Groot romance work?

You might find more than a few people who think too deeply about this and think Quill and Gamora are a bit of a forced romance. Also, because Quill is human (or technically), and Gamora is an alien, they shouldn’t be linking up for the good of the universe.

Thinking about Gamora falling in love with Groot is even more bizarre. We’ve seen Groot at various ages throughout the franchise, yet we see that he’s perhaps around middle age by Avengers: Endgame.

He obviously matures over a longer length of time than humans do, much like real trees on earth. Other than Gamora and Groot both being alien, imagining them hooking up and creating an alien/plant offspring is something perfect for a sci-fi version of The Onion.

Even better is the almost silly idea Quill has to win Gamora’s affections over Groot, creating discord in the Guardians group. Let’s assume this is only a crazy idea, but one we hope they at least film and include as an extra what-if in the incredible new world of Marvel alternate universes.
