Marvel’s Dave Bautista Cried When He Got His ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Role

Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Drax is coming to an end soon. After wrapping production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 8, 2022, Bautista confirmed the film will be the last time he plays Drax.

Dave Bautista is leaving the MCU

According to a report from IndieWire, Bautista shared a goodbye to Drax and the MCU in an Instagram post. The post also featured a picture of Bautista’s Guardians of the Galaxy co-stars, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn.

“Haven’t found the words yet. It ended so suddenly and I was on to my next film before I could process it all. End of a journey that changed my life,” Bautista added to the Instagram post.

Bautista’s announcement shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to Marvel fans paying close attention to the MCU and Bautista’s involvement in future movies. Bautista confirmed his time as Drax was coming to an end in October 2021. That time arrived sooner than anticipated.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 premieres in theaters on May 5, 2023.

How many more times will Drax appear in Marvel movies?

As of May 2022, Bautista appeared in four Marvel movies, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Bautista is slated to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, of course, and Thor: Love and Thunder, which premieres on July 8, 2022. That’s the next time you’ll be able to see Drax on-screen.

Unless Drax makes a surprise appearance in any of the upcoming Marvel movies, the character will have appeared in six MCU movies.

Bautista returns as Drax for the Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special on Disney+ later this year.

In addition to his upcoming Marvel appearances, Bautista stars Knives Out 2, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin, which should be released in the next two years.
