Gwen Stefani Admitted Her Relationship With Blake Shelton Felt Like a Big Old ‘What?’
Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton’s relationship took her fans by surprise. They believed the two musicians had too little in common to work romantically. Stefani admitted that the relationship also took her by surprise. She viewed the unexpectedness as a gift.

Stefani and Shelton became involved while they were both coaches on The Voice. They had both recently ended their marriages, and grew closer as they navigated their heartbreak. Stefani said she never expected to fall into such a meaningful relationship so soon after ending her marriage.
“I didn’t see any of this coming with Blake,” she told People. “This was just a big old ‘What?’ It was an amazing gift to experience love like that for the first time.”
While she was initially hesitant to jump into a new relationship so quickly, she realized that it was a good fit for her.
“He’s changed my life … when I [started dating] Blake, that’s when I felt home, like, ‘Oh, this is where I’m supposed to be, with this guy.”
They bonded over their divorces
When Shelton announced his divorce to the Voice coaches, Stefani decided to speak to him privately afterward. She had been keeping her own divorce a secret, but she wanted Shelton to know that she understood how he was feeling.
“I thought it was going to be another one of those things-are-going-to-be-OK talks,” he told Billboard. “She didn’t tell me much, because we didn’t know each other at the time, but she said, ‘I’m going through something very similar to what you’re going through. I understand. And I hate it.’ That’s kind of how our friendship and bond started, that day.”
Their relationship deepened from there.
“It went from that, to checking in on each other once a week through email — ‘This s*** happened to me, what happened to you?’ — to maybe three times a week, then every day, to ‘Hey, here’s my phone number if you ever want to text,’” he said. “Next thing I know, I wake up and she’s all I care about, and I’m wondering if she feels the same about me.”

Shelton and Stefani’s relationship confused some of her fans, but they say they work well together. According to Shelton, their romance makes sense when people consider how their religious beliefs have drawn them closer together.
“I believe in God now more than I ever have in my life,” Shelton told The Tennessean. “The biggest part of that is just how (Gwen) came into my life and now our relationship. It’s just too weird. If you take God out of it, it doesn’t make sense. If you put God into it, everything that’s happened with us makes sense.”
Shelton and Stefani married in 2021 after years of dating.
