Gwen Stefani Recalls Falling for Blake Shelton After the ‘Catastrophe’ of Her Divorce From Gavin Rossdale
Blake Shelton helped Gwen Stefani pick up the pieces after her divorce from Gavin Rossdale.
The “Spiderwebs” singer was shattered by the end of her marriage to the Bush frontman in 2015. Soon after, she started dating Shelton, her fellow coach on The Voice. The new relationship was the fresh start she needed after the painful breakup with Rossdale, she recently said.
Gwen Stefani says meeting Blake Shelton ‘felt like a second chance’
Stefani and Shelton first connected in 2014, when both appeared on The Voice. At the time, he was still married to country star Miranda Lambert. When both Stefani and Shelton’s marriages floundered at the same time, they found comfort with each other.
For Stefani, the universe was sending her a sign. The No Doubt member told Howard Stern (via People) in 2016 that it was “unbelievable that God would put us in a position to have each other at that moment, in the same exact moment.”
Now, nearly a decade later, Stefani still feels that Shelton – whom she married in 2021 – arrived in her life at exactly the right time.
“Meeting my husband felt like a second chance at life,” she told The Guardian in a November 2024 interview. “Because when my family fell apart it was a catastrophe. How do you pick yourself up from that? But God put this other person there to love me.”
Blake Shelton said Stefani ‘saved my life’ after Miranda Lambert divorce
Shelton has used language similar to Stefani’s when talking about their unexpected romance.
“Gwen saved my life,” he told Billboard in 2016. “Who else on earth could understand going through a high-profile divorce from another musician? You can’t even imagine the similarities in our divorces.”
Neither Lambert nor Shelton has said exactly what led to their split, though there were rumors of infidelity. Cheating was to blame for the end of Stefani’s marriage. Rossdale reportedly had a three-year, clandestine relationship with his children’s nanny. (He and Stefani are parents to Kingston, 17, Zuma, 15, and Apollo, 10). Stefani learned about the affair when she discovered explicit photos and messages on the family’s iPad, according to Us Weekly.
In a 2024 appearance on the Amy & T.J. podcast, Rossdale expressed regret about the “very contentious, hugely emotional, flared-up” end of his marriage to Stefani, saying he “never thought” he’d end up divorced. He also said he wished he had “more of a connection” with his former wife.
“There’s a loss,” he said.
At the same time, Rossdale said he didn’t want to speak disparagingly about the mother of his kids.
“Less said, soonest mended,” he said. “I’m handcuffed because I would never want to overly say anything negative about their mom. That’s just not right.”
