Gwen Stefani Said Blake Shelton’s Divorce Announcement Felt Like a ‘Gift’ to Her
In 2015, both Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton ended their marriages. Both artists were judges on The Voice at the time, having met in 2014. Stefani’s divorce ended because of infidelity, and she said she initially wanted to keep this a secret from her fellow judges. Then, Shelton announced that he was ending his marriage as well. She shared why this felt like a gift to her.
Gwen Stefani shared how she felt when Blake Shelton announced his divorce
In Feb. 2015, Stefani discovered that Gavin Rossdale, her husband of over a decade, allegedly cheated on her with their nanny. Stefani felt as though her world had fallen apart beneath her, but she tried to keep everything a secret for the sake of her children.
“It was the beginning of hell,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “Like six, seven, eight months of torture, trying to figure out this big secret.”
When she returned to the set of The Voice, she learned that Shelton divorcing from Miranda Lambert.
“There I was with my big secret, right?” she said. “And that’s when Blake was like, ‘Everybody, before we go out there, I want to let everyone know that by the time this airs, I will be divorced.'”
She said that knowing someone dealing with the same problems felt like a major relief.
“[I felt] exposed somehow, you know?” she said. “But it was like being handed this gift of a friend who was going through the exact same thing at the exact same time.”
Before long, Stefani and Shelton became involved.
“And then it was just like everything flipped,” she said. “It went from horrible to, like, hopeful and, like, ‘Wow, God, you just don’t know what’s gonna happen next.’
Gwen Stefani said Blake Shelton reminds her why she fell in love with him every day
Shelton and Stefani began dating in 2015 and married in 2021. After nearly 10 years together, Stefani said her husband still constantly reminds her why she fell in love with him.
“The thing about Blake is that you’ll never get through a day without laughing,” Stefani said on The Jennifer Hudson Show (via People). “You know what I mean? Which is just — it doesn’t even matter like what’s going on. The guy has so much patience, and so much kindness in his heart.”
She recently shut down divorce rumors
Though Stefani recently spoke glowingly about her husband, they dealt with divorce rumors in 2024. She said there was little truth to the rumors.
“But when you’re in love and have truly aligned values, nobody can get to us,” she told Nylon. “You can say whatever you want to say about our relationship — I mean, a week ago, we were getting divorced again or something. It’s just lies. The truth is the truth, and we know what that is. And so that [negativity] would never penetrate just by me being vulnerable and sharing a song that I didn’t write for anybody else but myself and Blake.”
The couple celebrated their third wedding anniversary in July.
