Gwen Stefani Thinks Her Politics Should Be ‘Pretty Obvious’ to People
When Gwen Stefani began a relationship with Blake Shelton, her fans began to wonder about her politics. While Shelton did not endorse Donald Trump ahead of the 2016 election, he spoke favorably of him. To many of Stefani’s fans, this felt incongruous with her public image. Stefani said that though she’ll never disclose how she casts her ballot, she feels that her political views should be clear to people.
Gwen Stefani spoke about her politics
In 2021, Stefani scarcely batted an eye when asked if her politics leaned to the right because of her relationship with Shelton.
“If you’re going to be a star, that’s what you get,” she told Paper Magazine. “You know what I mean? You get what you get, and you don’t get upset, at all.”
She did not explicitly list the political ideology she supports, but she believes it should be clear to her fans and people who know her.
“I can see how people would be curious, but I think it’s pretty obvious who I am,” she said. “I’ve been around forever. I started my band because we were really influenced by ska, which was a movement that happened in the late ’70s, and it was really all about people coming together.”
She noted that the first song she wrote was about love and togetherness. Barack Obama put it on one of his playlists.
“The first song I ever wrote was a song called ‘Different People,’ which was on the Obama playlist, you know, a song about everyone being different and being the same and loving each other,” she said. “The very first song I wrote.”
She still said she wouldn’t share who she votes for
While Stefani hinted at what she believes, she said she would never reveal how she votes.
“The whole point of voting, is you have this personal space to feel how you feel,” she said. “I use my platform to share my life story and to engage with people and to exchange whatever gift I was giving.”
Fans likely can expect to not see her endorse a particular candidate, either. She doesn’t think she knows enough about politics to do that.
“I’m not a political science major. I am not that person,” she said. “Everyone knows that. So why would I even talk about it?”
Gwen Stefani raised over half a million dollars for one political figure
While Stefani said she does not want to speak about her ballot, her money talked in 2012. Per W Magazine, Stefani was one of top bundlers for Barack Obama’s campaign, raising a minimum of $500,000. The bulk of this came from a fundraiser she hosted at her home with Michelle Obama.
She also personally donated $5,000 to Obama’s campaign and $1,250 to the DNC. That year, she made no donations to Republican candidates.
