Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt dated in the 1990s
As two of the most quintessential ’90s actors, Pitt and Paltrow made a great match. They met on the set of the crime thriller, Seven, in which they played husband and wife. Pitt and Paltrow began dating in 1994, and by 1996, they were engaged to be married.
But even matching hairstyles (as seen above, at the premiere of Pitt’s 1997 action-thriller The Devil’s Own) couldn’t keep them together. The young stars called off their engagement that very year. However, there didn’t appear to be much, if any, drama behind the scenes.
He was there for her during one important moment
The 1990s was the decade in which both of these actors established themselves in Hollywood. In fact, it was during filming for one of Paltrow’s earliest major roles, the titular lead in Emma, that she became one of Harvey Weinstein’s victims.
At the time, Paltrow and Pitt were together. And, as they both tell it, he then confronted the producer in public. Paltrow said that she “was very shaken by the whole thing,” when Weinstein touched her inappropriately. After she told Pitt, he approached Weinstein in public, allegedly saying, “If you ever make her feel uncomfortable again, I’ll kill you.”
Both went on to have multiple high-profile relationships
After their breakup, Paltrow and Pitt both continued to date notable people in entertainment. Pitt, as most are aware, began dating Jennifer Aniston in 1998, and they were married from 2000-2005. He was also in a relationship with Angelina Jolie from 2005-2016, and the two were married from 2014-2019.
As for Paltrow, she began dating Ben Affleck after breaking off her engagement with Pitt. They had an on-again, off-again relationship for a time. She was then married to Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin beginning in 2003, and “consciously uncoupling” in 2014. Now, Paltrow is married to producer Brad Falchuk.

As far as exes go, there’s really no story here. Given their ties to the industry, Paltrow and Pitt have obviously run into one another over the years. It was inevitable in Hollywood. In fact, just this past weekend, both attended the 2020 Golden Globe Awards. But Paltrow clearly has no ill will toward her ex, once telling Howard Stern, “he’s the best.”
“I’m friendly with Brad Pitt. I don’t have any really bad blood,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in a new interview, speaking about her relationship with Pitt and all of her exes in general, it would appear. Paltrow also remarked on how many like to pay homage to her ’90s look with Pitt, saying, “I love it.” So do we, Goop. So do we.
