Fans love Chicago P.D.‘s Hailey Upton — but her mental state in Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 4 had viewers worried. In season 8, Upton killed Kim Burgess’s attacker, Roy, with only Hank Voight present — and Voight helped cover up the body. Now, fans are wondering what will happen as Jay Halstead learns the truth. Is Hailey Upton leaving Chicago P.D.? And what will happen if Jay Halstead spills her secrets to the rest of the Intelligence Unit.
Jay Halstead learns the truth about Roy in ‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 9 Episode 4
Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton’s relationship has been rocky since the first episode of Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 4 — and it’s had fans wondering if Hailey Upton will leave Chicago P.D. ever since. When Upton killed Roy, only Hank Voight knew the truth. They lied to the others in the Intelligence Unit and acted as if Roy was still at large. But Halstead grew suspicious, as Upton stopped eating, sleeping, and acting like her normal self.
Finally, in Chicago P.D. Episode 9 Season 4, he learned the truth from Voight. After Upton continued to act strangely and not sleep, Halstead tracked down Voight’s car — and that’s where Voight finally told Halstead everything.
“Hailey had no choice but to shoot,” Voight told Halstead. “She saved my life. That’s what happened. … Jay, you can be mad at me. You can be as angry as you want. But now you know. So, help her.”
Is Hailey Upton leaving ‘Chicago P.D.’?
At the end of Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 4, Jay Halstead returns to the house after learning the truth from Hank Voight. The episode ends with him standing by Hailey Upton’s bed looking angry and disappointed.
So, is Hailey Upton leaving Chicago P.D. now that she has some idea that Halstead knows the truth? While Upton has found herself in hot water due to the Roy situation, we doubt she’ll leave. Voight told Halstead to “help” Upton overcome everything she’s gone through. Once the initial shock wears off of Halstead, we imagine we’ll see how it impacts their relationship the rest of the season.
Upton actor Tracy Spiridakos also gave a clue that Upton has a lot more plot left in the season. “The guilt of it all and keeping it a secret from Burgess, keeping it a secret from Halstead, is a struggle and we see her kind of unravel throughout, she told TV Insider. “We’re only on episode 5 so far, but from what I understand, we see that struggle continue for her for a while.”
Additionally, fans anticipate a Halstead/Upton wedding — but it seems there aren’t any concrete plans for that just yet, which could mean the couple breaks up. “I’m not sure if there’s going to be an actual wedding this season or if that’ll come later,” Spiridakos added.
What will happen if Jay Halstead goes to the police with Hailey Upton’s secrets?
While Hailey Upton leaving Chicago P.D. Season 9 seems unlikely, will she leave the Intelligence Unit? And what will happen if Jay Halstead spills her secrets to the rest of the department?
According to One Chicago Center, the department could transfer Upton if they learn she killed Roy — and that’s on the lighter end of consequences. She could ultimately lose her badge and get taken to court for the scenario. This could also jeopardize Hank Voight’s standing with the department as well.
Will Halstead tell everyone else about what happened to Roy? Halstead actor Jesse Lee Soffer reminded CinemaBlend Halstead has kept a number of secrets of his own. This could mean he’s willing to cover for Upton.
“Like at some point, it could be Jay that’s not on the straight and narrow,” he said. “You know, it hasn’t been in the past. And Jay’s kept things from Voight and lied and covered stuff up.”
Chicago P.D. Season 9 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.
