Halle Berry Once Shared Why She Wouldn’t Adopt a Child Overseas
Before Halle Berry became a mother of two children, she didn’t rule out the possibility of adoption. However, the actor doubted she’d end up adopting overseas like other celebrities did.
What Halle Berry thought about adoption
Berry is already the mother of two children. She shares her daughter Nahla with her ex, Gabriel Aubry. She also shares a son, Marco, with her other ex, Olivier Martinez. But Berry once felt that adoption was on the table; it was even something she considered if she did have kids the traditional way.
“I will adopt if it doesn’t happen for me naturally,” Berry once told Extra (via Today). “I will definitely adopt. And I probably will adopt even if it does happen naturally.”
But at the time, she wouldn’t adopt the same way that celebrities like Angelina Jolie did. Jolie and others adopted children overseas after forming a special connection with them. Berry, however, thought it would’ve fit her better to adopt children from her own country.
“If I go that route, I think I would adopt a child from here. There are many children right here in this country who need homes. That’s if I adopted. I don’t know if I ever will, but if I did, that’s what I’d do,” she once said in an interview with Kam Williams.
Halle Berry feared giving birth
Berry couldn’t have been more excited to give birth to her first child in 2008. But the process also came with a certain amount of dread. Berry grew more nervous the closer she was to giving birth.
“I’ve been pretty cool about my pregnancy up until lately, but suddenly I’m realizing that there’s a baby that’s got to come out and someone is going to have to be there to push it out,” she once said in an interview with Reveal (via People).
It didn’t help that she didn’t have the best response to the changes she experienced during her pregnancy.
“Emotionally, I’m a bit of a mess. Besides all the hormones bubbling and boiling inside me, the anticipation is starting to get to me. I’m more nervous now than I was during the Oscars,” Berry said.
Still, the challenges of her first pregnancy didn’t discourage her from getting pregnant a second time. She was 46 years old when she had Marco, describing his birth as one of the most shocking events in her life.
Halle Berry would’ve had more kids if she got pregnant earlier
As difficult as pregnancy might’ve been, there were a few positive side effects. In an interview with InStyle (via Hollywood Life), Berry once noted that she felt her sexiest when she was pregnant. The process of giving birth also drowned out many of the concerns she used to have when she wasn’t expecting. So much so Berry would’ve had even more children if she got pregnant sooner.
“Around the time of my third InStyle cover, in 2007, I became a mom at 40. Knowing that someone would always be counting on me made me a better person. I’m more focused and in line with my values and my goals. I stopped letting negativity get me down. Plus, I loved being pregnant. Had I started earlier, I probably would have had five children. Or if I hadn’t been busy trying to make movies, I would have been the perfect surrogate,” she said. “All the hormones made me feel amazing. I was so alive with my purpose and my femininity. It felt like my body was doing what it was built to do.”
