Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit Broadway musical, Hamilton is now on Disney+, and fans who could never find tickets to the show, are now able to enjoy the splendor from the comfort of their homes. Viewers are spotting numerous familiar faces in the film, including original cast member Jonathan Groff, who returns to play King George. Here’s why the actor looks so familiar.

Who is Jonathan Groff and what else has he been in?

Groff is a Grammy Award-winning actor and singer who began his career as a stage actor in his hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 2006, he landed his Tony Award-nominated role as Melchior Gabor in the Broadway rock musical Spring Awakening opposite his best friend, Lea Michele. The actor later joined Michele on her Fox show, Glee, portraying her love interest, Jesse St. James. 

But Groff’s most notable role came with the Disney animated movie, Frozen. In the film, he voices Kristoff, the rugged ice trader who falls in love with Princess Anna (Kristen Bell). Groff reprised the role in Frozen Fever, LEGO Frozen Northern Lights, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, and Frozen 2

Currently, Groff plays FBI agent Holden Ford in the Netflix drama, Mindhunter. The actor is also slated to appear in the upcoming Keanu Reeves film, The Matrix 4.

He joined the cast of ‘Hamilton’ in 2015

A seasoned stage actor, Groff joined the cast of Hamilton when it first hit Broadway in 2015. He took on the part of King George III, a role that was previously held by Brian D’Arcy in the off-Broadway production.

In 2016,  the Hamilton cast, including Groff, earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. The same year, Groff was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance.

Jonathan Groff returns to play King George in Disney+ ‘Hamilton’ movie

The Hamilton movie, which was previously slated for a theatrical release, hit Disney+ on July 3. Many of the show’s original cast members returned to film the musical, including creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. 

“We’re excited to partner with Disney to bring the original Broadway company of Hamilton to the largest audience possible,” Miranda told Variety. “What I’m most excited about [is] you all have that friend that is like, ‘I saw it with the original cast.’ We’re stealing that brag from everyone because you’re all going to see it with the original cast.”

Along with Miranda as Alexander Hamilton and Groff as King George, the movie features original cast members Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Schuyler, Anthony Ramos as Laurens and Phillip, Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy, Thayne Jasperson as Samuel Seabury, and Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler.
