A quick recap of the ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 4 Episode 9 ending
In The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 Episode 9, “Progress,” Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) and Fred realized they wouldn’t be welcomed back to Gilead with open arms. They also feared the state would take away their baby.
Meanwhile, June reunited with Nick Blaine (Max Minghella), who gathered a great deal of intel on Hannah, including her location. Later, June thanked Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger) for making the visit happen. She also asked about their next step. Tuello revealed there was a “new asset” in Toronto who knew Gilead’s system and how it operates. Then he dropped the bomb.
“It’s Fred Waterford,” Tuello said. “He has agreed to share his wealth of knowledge. Inside information about Gilead. All its top players, future plans. … In exchange for his freedom. The prosecution has dropped his charges.”
June realized her testimony must’ve spooked Fred, and Tuello used his fear to flip the commander. Then when faced with the accusation, Tuello suggested that they let Fred go to catch a lot of other big players. June broke.
“That man is a f*cking rapist, and you know what he did to me!” June said. “You know what he did to those women! I’m gonna f*cking kill you! You know what he did to all of us!”
The ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 4 Episode 10 promo trailer hints what’s next for June and Fred
For now, fans will have to watch whether Fred and Serena walk free in the season finale. But from the looks of the Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 Episode 10 promo trailer, June won’t give up without a fight.
The preview starts with June and Tuello speaking alone in the city.
“So I should just get comfortable with the fact that he’s gonna get out, no matter what he did, no matter what I say,” June says.
Then Fred speaks in a voiceover as Serena cradles her pregnant belly.
“I’ll return a free man, a husband, and a father,” he says.
As the Handmaid’s Tale promo continues, June questions the right decision.
“Maybe what he’s giving them is more valuable than what he took from me,” June says.
Nevertheless, the trailer seemingly indicates June will put matters into her own hands. She holds baby Nichole with tears in her eyes. A shot of an ambulance also flashes by. Then June is seen in the middle of the woods completely surrounded by flashlights. The Handmaid’s Tale preview ends with June echoing the voices of many fans at home.
“I need Fred to get what he deserves,” she says.
What to expect from ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 4 finale

Both Strahovski and Samira Wiley (Moira Strand) called the new episode “satisfying.” Then Minghella revealed the final chapter will “leave the door open for anything” in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5.
Meanwhile, writer-producer Eric Tuchman told Entertainment Weekly the Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 finale will be about “June struggling with how to respond to Fred’s freedom.” But ultimately, it seems like fans are in for an intense ride.
“The conclusion is both shocking and inevitable, like all good endings, and it sets up a lot of intriguing possibilities for the future of the show,” Tuchman said. “So I think it’ll be satisfying and provocative, and tracks June’s emotional journey from the beginning of the season to the end.”
Hulu will drop The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 Episode 10 on June 16, 2021.
