Has Shakira Ever Been Married?
Shakira is somewhat of an enigma in the music world. She stays largely out of the limelight, yet has not dwindled in popularity. But now that she is getting ready to perform at the Super Bowl, all eyes are on her and people are wanting to know more about the singer’s personal life.
She’s currently dating soccer star Gerard Piqué but has Shakira ever been married? Does she even want to get married?
Has Shakira ever been married?
Shakira has had a few relationships before Piqué. In 1997, she dated Osvaldo Ríos, a telenovela star from Puerto Rico. The two dated for eight months and she wrote her song “Moscas en la Casa” about him. They never got married.
In 2000, Shakira began dating Antonio de la Rúa, the son of the former president of Argentina, Fernando de la Rua. They were together for 10 years and Shakira considered them in a partial marriage.
“I’m semi-married,” she told USA Today when she was with de la Rúa. “We function as a married couple; we don’t need papers for that.”
The two split in 2010 and de la Rúa sued the singer for $100 million dollars after she ended their working relationship but the lawsuit was eventually dismissed.
Since then, she has been with Piqué. The two have been together for a decade but Shakira doesn’t want to get married.
“I just don’t find marriage a necessary step in a couple’s life,” she told Latina in 2014.
Why Shakira won’t ever get married
Though Shakira has been in several long-term relationships, she is not in any rush to head down the aisle.
“To tell you the truth marriage scares the —- out of me,” Shakira said on 60 Minutes. “I don’t want him to see me as the wife. I’d rather him see me as his girlfriend. His lover, his girlfriend. It’s like a little forbidden fruit, you know? I wanna keep him on his toes. I want him to think that anything’s possible depending on behavior.”
Piqué and Shakira’s relationship
Shakira first met Piqué when shooting the music video for the 2010 FIFA World Cup official song, “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).”
“It all started when we were in South Africa and I wrote to her,” the soccer star told TV3 in 2016. “She was already there because she sang in the opening ceremony and I asked her what the weather was like. It is the typical stupid question, and the normal answer is to tell me to bring a jacket. But she started telling me what the weather was like in every single moment and it got to the point where I told her we would have to get to the World Cup final to see her again—she was singing at the final.”
By 2011, they went public with their relationship and in September of 2012, Shakira announced that she was pregnant with their first child. Their first son, Milan Piqué Mebarak, was born on January 22, 2013.
They continued growing their family and on January 29, 2015, they had a second son named Sasha Piqué Mebarak.
The two have been happily together ever since. So married or not, their bond seems to be a strong one.
