‘Hawkeye’ Star Jeremy Renner Admits That Natasha Romanoff’s Death Scene ‘Breaks His Heart’
Avengers: Endgame features many heartbreaking moments for both the fans and the actors who played these Marvel superheroes for many years. But for Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner, one scene, in particular, was especially hard to film for the fourth Avengers movie.
Natasha Romanoff died in ‘Avengers: Endgame’
For Avengers: Endgame, the stakes were higher than they had ever been for any Marvel Cinematic Universe film. And the death of two original Avengers in the movie proved that its content would have lasting effects in the MCU for years to come.
The Avengers who lived following Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War worked to reverse the Mad Titan’s actions. They sought to travel through time and collect the Infinity Stones because Thanos destroyed the ones in the present. Each of the remaining superheroes was assigned a stone, and they split up to complete their mission.
Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton were selected to retrieve the Soul Stone on Vormir. Unfortunately for the two friends, they had no idea the toll the Soul Stone would require to retrieve it.
When Natasha and Clint got to Vormir, Red Skull informed them that one of them had to sacrifice a loved one to obtain the stone. Natasha and Clint fought over which one would be the sacrifice, as neither of them wanted their best friend to die. In the end, Clint flung himself over the side of the cliff, but Natasha saved him and fell to her death instead. And Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner, who plays Clint, has come clean about filming the tragic scene.
Jeremy Renner discusses Natasha’s death during ‘Hawkeye’ press tour
During the press tour for their Marvel Disney+ show, Hawkeye stars Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld took a multiple-choice Marvel trivia quiz for Buzzfeed.
One of the questions asked, “In Avengers: Endgame, what is Natasha’s final line when she and Clint are on Vormir?” At first, Renner admitted, “I was in that scene, and I have no idea.” As Steinfeld started to read the answer options, Renner interrupted and said, “It’s ‘Tell them yourself!'” But Steinfeld hilariously let him know that that wasn’t one of the options.
A lightbulb then went off in Renner’s head, and he immediately said, “Oh, wait! No, it’s like when she says, ‘It’s OK.'” And as many MCU superfans know, that is the right answer.
After the Hawkeye actors got the answer correct, Jeremy Renner revealed how much that scene means to him. “That scene hurts me, by the way. It’s really affected my personal life. It breaks my heart, that scene.”
It breaks our hearts, too, Jeremy Renner.
‘Hawkeye’ might be the last time Jeremy Renner plays Clint Barton
Jeremy Renner might be following in the footsteps of Scarlett Johansson and other original MCU actors following the finale of Hawkeye. During an interview with GamesRadar+, Renner discussed whether or not Hawkeye would be his final MCU project.
“I don’t have a crystal ball, or I’m not a soothsayer. But having Hailee come in and these characters, I think it opens it up for six great episodes for this event type of television,” Renner teased. “After that, I have no idea. But these six episodes are pretty exciting.”
Many fans believe that following Hawkeye, Steinfeld’s character, Kate Bishop, will take over the mantle of Hawkeye from Clint Barton and that Clint will retire from the superhero business. Of course, nothing is certain until the final episode airs, but the theory makes sense.
The first two episodes of Hawkeye, starring Jeremy Renner, are now streaming on Disney+.
