Hawkeye is bringing attention to one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most under-utilized Avengers, allowing its titular hero to finally confront everything that happened during Avengers: Endgame. The Disney+ show sees the archer’s time as Ronin catching up to him in a big way. It also touches on his grief following Natasha Romanoff’s (Scarlett Johansson) sacrifice. But despite the impact Avengers: Endgame has on the Disney+ show, Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner has only seen the film once — and he plans to keep it that way.

Clint Barton has a tough time in ‘Avengers: Endgame’

Avengers: Endgame wrapped up more than a decade of storytelling in the MCU, and the franchise’s fans and actors were understandably emotional when it arrived. The characters went through it in the fourth Avengers movie, and many of the original Avengers bid farewell to the franchise. Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) wasn’t one of them — but Hawkeye didn’t exactly have an easy time of it in the film either.

The movie opens with Clint’s entire family disappearing during the Blip, and his troubles don’t end there. Not only does he begin mercilessly killing criminals as Ronin to obtain some twisted form of revenge, but he eventually loses Natasha as they attempt to undo Thanos’ snap.

The character’s grief is palpable during the film, and that likely required some emotional investment on Renner’s part. Perhaps that’s why the actor has no interest in revisiting Avengers: Endgame any time soon.

That’s right, Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner has no desire to revisit his character’s storyline in Avengers: Endgame — well, not by watching the film anyway.

During an interview with BBC Radio 1, Renner admitted the only time he’s seen the fourth Avengers movie was at its premiere. That’s not uncommon for actors, but he went on to admit how difficult the whole affair was. Although it was special sharing it with his Marvel co-stars, he doesn’t have any interest in getting on that emotional roller coaster again:

“I saw it at the premiere, but that was just something to celebrate for all of us. We were all laughing and weeping, and it was a lot, it was a lot to do. I’ll never watch that again. It was a difficult experience. We were all just a sobbing mess and we’re laughing. It’s amazing, we were like audience members, and that was awesome to experience. That was a lovely, beautiful experience to share.”

Given his close relationship with his co-stars, it’s probably not just Clint’s subplot that makes it a difficult watch. It couldn’t have been easy seeing Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson depart from the franchise, especially after so much time working with them.

Even if Jeremy Renner won’t be watching Avengers: Endgame again, he’ll have to face his character’s actions in the film during Hawkeye. With the return of the Ronin suit, he’s already doing so, and it looks like the truth may come out during the Disney+ show.

What that means for the character remains a question. Although he’d likely prefer a peaceful retirement with his wife and kids, his past mistakes might not allow for that. Only time will tell if he actually makes it home for Christmas.
