Fans do see a glimpse of this character outside of East High School. In season 1 of the Disney+ original, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, viewers met Carol and Dana, who are Nini’s parents.
“Yup, two moms,” Olivia said at the series premiere during an interview with Hollywood Life. “My character has two moms, and I loved the way that they did that. They just portrayed it as completely normal and natural, which… that’s just real life.”
“And it’s not a statement. It’s not a punchline; it’s just how it is,” she continued. “It’s completely accepted and just a normal part of life that we’re portraying.”
‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ also included characters Carlos and Seb
With the “Homecoming” episode of season 1 and the quinceañero episode of season 2, fans caught a glimpse into the relationship between Carlos and Seb, two theater students at East High School.
According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Carlos is only the second gay regular in a Disney series; the first was Cyrus (Joshua Rush) in Andi Mack.
“There was a flood of messages that were, like, ‘Wow, this is great. I feel seen. You’re telling my story,’” Frankie Rodriguez, who portrays the character, said during an interview with the same publication. “But it was mainly from adults who reached out and said, ‘If I would have seen this when I was in high school, I would have felt a lot less alone.’
Carlos and Seb are two central characters in this mockumentary. Disney+ also created the LGBTQ characters named Camila and Bobby for their original series Diary of a Future President.
