These high school students are tackling a tale as old as time. Who will play Gaston in the Disney+ High School Musical: The Musical: The Series production of Beauty and the Beast? There’s one character who is an obvious contender.

‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ is doing ‘Beauty and the Beast’ for their next musical

The students of East High School are back and ready to act in another musical production. Thanks to a post from the Disney+ Instagram account, fans learned that they’re actually doing another Disney-related show — the live version of Beauty and the Beast.

Not much is known about this upcoming season, including who will portray the two lead roles, Belle and the Beast. There’s also the question of who will portray the villain, the hunky, manliest man in Belle’s village, Gaston.

Some think EJ could portray Gaston in ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Although EJ came around during the finale of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, this character definitely has the voice, and the acting range, to portray the villain of Beauty and the Beast

Knowing EJ, he might want to audition for the Beast, but this antagonist role still comes with a number of songs, including “The Mob Song” and “Gaston.” There are plenty of talented East High students up for the challenge, though.

Seb, who already portrayed the “villain” of High School Musical, could return to the stage for this role. There’s also Carlos, the talented choreographer who may be ready to show off his singing skills for an audience.

Nini and Ricky already had the leads in ‘High School Musical’

Of course, there’s the coveted role of Belle in this musical production and it’s still unclear who will get the title character. Miss Jenn’s made some questionable casting decisions in the past, (Ricky with no experience getting Troy over EJ, to be specific,) so anything could happen.

Because Nini already got to play the lead role, some fans suspect another character will have a chance at the spotlight, and there are plenty of talented cast members willing to take the role. That includes Gina Porter, who was expected to transfer to a different high school but could potentially stay after Ashlyn hinted at an idea.

After portraying Sharpay, (and arguably stealing the show on opening night,) Seb is a contender for playing a “genderbent” Belle. Kourtney also stepped out from the wardrobe department as an understudy for High School Musical. After an incredible performance, Miss Jenn shares that she had big plans for this student. Could that include a role in Beauty and the Beast?

More information regarding the new season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will presumably be announced in the coming weeks. Until then, fans can catch up with Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, and other cast members on social media.
