What is the Hilary Duff Challenge?

The Hilary Duff Challenge is a dance craze that started in late 2021 after a 2007 video of Duff went viral on TikTok. In the video, Duff could be seen performing her song “With Love” on stage. As described by Bustle, Duff “must have been exhausted that day, because she executed the choreography with a kind of casual apathy, shimmying half-heartedly through the moves as her backup dancers gesticulated wildly.”

Fans latched onto the video, and many people started performing their own version of Duff’s dance. On Nov. 15, 2021, Duff joined in on the challenge and recreated the dance on her TikTok’s profile.

She also shared the video on Instagram and wrote, “So I can stop receiving text about this…. also….. I tik toked….and it was a 12% kinda day.”

Hilary Duff admits she did not like the Hilary Duff Challenge

Although Duff participated in the challenge, she did not always have good feelings about it.

“Even though, at the end of the day, I know that a majority of people hold me in a very endeared space, it’s still… bullying,” she told Bustle. “You’re like, ‘Let’s dig up photos of you when you were 16 or 17 or when you were eating 500 calories a day. Or when you hated the world, or your parents were getting divorced, or your boyfriend slept with your girlfriend.”

Nonetheless, she remembered the thought process that made her eventually decide to do the challenge: “I do remember that time, so I’m going to have some fun with it. No one will shut up about it, so here’s my attempt.”

Duff was a media fixture in the 2000s, much like other stars such as Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. However, Duff received much better media coverage than some female celebrities her age because she did not publicly rebel against her family-friendly image.

“I knew I had a responsibility,” Duff told Bustle. “If I found myself in a situation of being drunk at the club, I didn’t want to be on the cover of a magazine like that. I kept a low profile, [used] the back door, not the front door.”

Although she admitted that she still partied “not every night but some nights,” Duff grew up pretty quickly. She got married at the age of 22 and became a mom at 24. Now, as a 34-year-old, she is on her second marriage and is a mom to three young kids.
